Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

What is your biggest remark tro the work atmosphere?

Is it?

  • Lazy managers that don’t do their job and dump all of their work onto the employee
  • Nepotism and favoritism
  • Constant fear of layoffs
  • Lousy pay

Or maybe it’s something else?

In my experience it’s a bunch of executives who learned a technical skill and got promoted to lead people because of it, yet have zero management or people experience. So they surround themselves with people who are just like them.

It’s an old boys club, laden with bias and favoritism. Promotions and pay raises have nothing to do with productivity or results but with people who fit in or who mimic leadership’s qualities.

Lousy pay if you don’t fit into the boys club.

At this point, I fear not being laid off :). but to directly answer the question....to me the biggest issue is the duplicity of messaging.

Be Agile...but get all your paperwork in 4 weeks before the release... uhmmm what? Most profitable year ever, but you can't be productive if you don't show up to the office. We have a focus on "co-location" but we're furthering the model to offshore resources. We are focused on the environment, but get your bu-t in your car and drive to the office.

Basically for everything they try to claim in the press, they do something 180degrees away from in reality.

Layoffs have been an annual event since the mid 2000s. Unfortunately, companies have merged over and over resulting in job duplication, as well as a way for corporations to squeeze the last breath of life out of employees, by reducing older, higher earning and low performing workers, passing the work onto whomever remains. The poor suckers who remain are over worked and very competitive with each other for a title change with peanuts if a raise at all. This is not going to change and so the constant fear of annual layoffs will continue on. The worst part is the annual layoffs usually spark a continuous fear in whomever remains. With the current state of the economy it’s only going to get worse.

Remember you are human capital and an asset for the bank. Get an education if you don’t have one already or obtain a skilled trade and get out! The layoff fears don’t exist at other companies. It’s a tactic that will likely never go away until you leave and work for a company that appreciates your hard work.

Many a people these days don’t get it. They get up and go to work Monday-Friday for things. This is way of life is what most of us are taught from early on. We sell ourselves and free time for meaningless things…a bigger house….a nicer car….a bigger boat. Be happy with a house and a car and keep your time because you can’t get it back and you can’t take the things with you when you die and remember there are two for sure things in life….taxes and death😉
