So many people are either quitting or saying they will quit as soon as they have an alternative and I just keep face/palming every time I hear/read about it. BNY Mellon is on a RIFing spree. People are being laid off nonstop. Those people are walking away with a nice sum in their pocket instead of with nothing. Why would anybody choose the latter?

Easy. I got another opportunity that’s going to pay me more and provide opportunity to grow. Leaving after almost 20 years. I too thought I might as well stay and ride it out. But I have to say, it feels good to get out. Like a weight off my shoulders or a breath of fresh air.
Maybe some of us want to be in control of our destiny. If I have a job, I can be more choosy about accepting a job with another firm. Finally, the pressure of a layoff and loss of pay is not something to wish on your worst enemy.

Some people may have make up their mind to change industry. So why wait for BNY to squeeze you to the last drop of blood.

You probably don’t want to get fired, however, since layoffs are constantly happening here, you could hold out for a lay off. Remain doing your job, but speak up about the unfair management practices that occur to your manager, assuming you have an inadequate manager. Reading these threads it sounds like there are many. Stand up for colleagues that have been treated poorly by management, report the poor culture on Peakon Survey’s. It’s always good to be open and honest with management and the company. By trying to report failed leadership you will be rewarded with a lay off. It could be a win for you depending on your circumstances. It could be better than quitting if you have the patience. But I know that can be hard. It’s a really tough place culturally to work. It wasn’t always as bad as it has become. It’s hard, but try not to let them headtrip you. Just remain on the high road.
Unless you're certain you have another job lined-up already or are worried about getting a good reference from this place (definitely not a certainty), I don't see any reason to quit instead of making them fire you. At least you're guaranteed unemployment benefits for 6 months if they have to let you go, and that's plenty of time to seek out something new.
if you only get a few months sub pay & are in pgh, Unless you are looking for an entry-level position, a few months sun pay is not enough.
many of us don’t want to be let go, even though we think this is a terrible place to work. Options are limited in some locations… All many of us want is to be treated fairly and with respect- which happens less every year.
