I've always tried to do my job to the best of my ability and to have a great performance. Now I wonder how important is great performance here anyway? Less and less, it seems.

as a former employee they don't care. I was probably one of the best support people in my group but my manager would find ways to mark me down on my review and then they let me go.
Just looking in from the outside, continue on the path that you are on. Upper management (any company) does in fact notice employee's that are great performers. They seemed to have forgotten to throw them a bone every once and a while. I'm not talking about any type of elaborate praise, but a simple "nice job" or "we appreciate what your doing". If someone like you does in fact get the axe, just move on as your performance (we assume you have good performance reviews) will speak for itself. There are plenty of jobs out there. Good luck...
