YouTube Offers Employees Voluntary Buyout As Company Embraces AI

YouTube is undergoing a staffing shakeup as the company pivots to focus on artificial intelligence, offering its US-based employees voluntary buyout packages with severance.

The online video platform, which launched in 2005, is restructuring its products team for the first time since 2015, according to an internal memo from YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, as parent company Google‘s CEO Sundar Pichai has urged staff to embrace AI for increased productivity.

@aw CNBC just had a story about how great AI is and how companies including Google no longer need employees. I wish they had read your message, as it is spot on.

Too bad this SEP is offered only for selected divisions.

And if you think it's about LLMs that generate code, you've obviously never used them for anything real.

The LLMs are tools that help with some tedious tasks, but not much more. Whenever I've given the LLM anything hard, it completely fails. It can generate some boring boilerplate code, or maybe some tests, but it can't really debug anything unless you lead it right up to the place it found the bug.

YouTube wants to cut some costs for 2026, but they don't want to cut a LOT of people, so they offer buy-outs, and make some d-mb excuse about AI.
