Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Anyone know what contracting agencies Fidelity works with for tech hiring?

Laid off from Fidelity as a SWE in 2024, became a contractor at another company using a contracting agency that works with Fidelity. Wanted to know if there’s a list of contracting agencies Fidelity uses so I can contact them and have more contacting agencies under my belt looking for a job when I need one. Thank you.

@vf I admire your positivity. Try to keep it and you'll be a successful person. Some of the whining that goes on here is shameful

@yh OP here again. Thank you for your reply. If you don’t mind me asking, since I’m trying to learn, where do you disagree? I found that coding bootcamps seem to be “dead” in the traditional sense, because corporate everywhere is adopting their own version of the Leap program. Their own coding bootcamps with people that earned their bachelors in a related field, and where they can learn about code and the company they work at. So AI? I’m not sure. The software engineer game changed, it’s just not gonna “ki-l” software engineering.

To the comment from @xc, although I interpreted pessimism in there (we’re on a website about layoffs), that’s also 100% true. BUT, we don’t bow down to AI. We master it.

@vf appreciate the thoughtful response. Respect disagreement with some of it, but only because I learned it the hard way myself too. Best of luck in the coming AI disruptions.

nobody is hiring newbie software devs. AI can do your job better than you. Best if you concentrate on AI in some manner if you wish to stay in software dev.

@dz I’m OP, my reasons all broil down to just a personal preference. Remember, I’m currently out of the Green Machine, so I’m in companies that run differently from Fidelity.

I’m young. Under 30 years old. I’d like to spend a few years as a journeyman software engineer. I’d like to learn in some different positions, different projects, different industries, different managers, different values, and figure out what I’m comfortable with. I’m also rapidly expanding my network while I’m young, so if I’m ever laid off again, I can reach out to people I met in my travels. I truly appreciated the vast network I made at Fidelity. In fact, I got my current job today because a few weeks after I got laid off, I had a conversation with a Fidelity employee about my situation. He got up from his desk when I said “laid off”, took me to a private room and counseled me while I was stressed. He connected me to the contracting agency that got me my job today. Which I’ve had very positive experience with so far!

Outside of Fidelity, I find that in this field, we’re currently in a “contract” economy rather than a full time economy. I found that it’s much easier to find a job as a contractor now than an FTE. I know they’re available at Fidelity, but there’s such a bigger world out there than Fidelity.

In fact, a chapter lead friend who kept up with me after my layoff told me they believe contract interviews are “easier”, because another part of the interview is the probationary period to see if you’re good at the job. I know that’s included in all jobs regardless of contract/FTE, but with a contractor it’s very easy to just… cut somebody.

So really, personal growth is what I want to focus on. The full time will follow. I just need to keep learning while young. That way, I can get a remote job (with help of a contracting agency) that pays me more money and full time benefits. The money is already pretty sweet. The REAL money comes with what you know. I want to learn as much as I can now so I can earn my chance at a damn good paycheck. And maybe that’ll be at Fidelity one day. I doubt that though, I want to remain remote :P

I am curious if you are willing to share why you want to go back as a contractor instead of direct?

Fidelity Talent Source (FTS) works with ICCs to funnel contractors in. They then work their tails off to get converted to full time.
