Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

It's no longer just the management

This management has ruined this company so much that the entire organization has turned toxic. I get the feeling that everyone hates each other, and there is zero sense of community. People treat each other like they're disposable and not human beings with feelings and families. It's just become a depressing place to work.

An old boss once told me decades ago, the culture you see throughout an organization is a reflection of the effectiveness of its own leadership. At this point BNY Mellon's "leadership" can be summed up in two words. Incompetence and Failure!

You are sadly right. Top of the house leadership has created a toxic culture, just look at your engagement scores, they are terrible. Clients should be concerned with how low they are.

Reaping the rewards of a toxic attitude…

My new senior manager has played a lot of favorites because they worked with her at a previous firm. If one of those people needed help with something after 5 on Friday, plan on staying late even if it can wait until Monday. If someone else not from that group had the same request 12pm on Friday, she would tell them to go pound sand and say they should've gotten ahead of it more. I saw this internally, too, when her direct reports from her old firm would have greater clout than any of us who knew what they were doing. I could say "the sky is blue" but she wouldn't believe me unless it came from someone she knew prior to BNYM.

And no, I have no incentive to help my teammates unless there is a direct benefit to me; that is, stacked rankings prevent me from sharing all my best tools and approaches. I'll gladly make sure that things appear under control whenever I'm involved with something and see it go downhill when I'm not involved. I hate to say I've gotten that toxic, but BNYM has done that to me.

It’s been toxic here since 2008. That’s not going to change.

What does their color have to do with anything? And it’s spelled toupe.

Here's one possibility. Tope Executives have hired MD's based on friendship rather than capability. They in turn have hired folks that are their friends and family, i.e. FOB as they are called. So you can think of this either as the culture of the bank is changing from "Why come here just to end your career" to a progressive "let's move the bank into the future". Change is hard. Especially for those who have been around for awhile. But to quote Churchill "If you don't take change my the hand, change takes you by the throat". I will say progress also means you treat your greatest asset, namely your people, better. BNYM needs to do a much better "job" at communicating to their people, and not through silly Peakon surveys, but listening to what people are saying and not giving them lip service. The Leadership of the form needs to think they are no better than the many who perform everyday hard work. Instead they need to see themselves as one of many in the foxholes arm in arm with the fight. Illuminate the elitist attitudes and become more democratized in their thinking. Just my 2 cents

How long have you been in Finance? In my 15 years in companies like MS, JPM, GS and BNYM it's always been the same: deliver, deliver, deliver - take no prisoners and nobody is your friend.

Btw, I have found that here it's still better than the other companies I worked for.
