Poll: Did your Performance Eval results surprise you

Interested in hearing if your performance eval rating/manager comments were as expected or a surprise?
For the first time in over 18 years, I received a “less than expected” rating even though I achieved my stated goals, met deadlines.

@1a1 I've gotten a 4. You would have gotten an extra 0.5-1% raise and an extra 20% on your MIP, approximately. A 4 also permanently resets the expectations for your output. By any metric, a 4 isn't worth it. You want to aim for 3s and avoid being on the radar for being pushed out of the org. You don't want 4s.

I marked 4 on my self-eval even though 3 was likely; what the heck, it doesn't matter what I put down anyway. My manager wanted to also put 4, but said that 4s were being heavily restricted, and so are 3s this year (for the first time). So I ended up with a 3, and 95% self-performance MIP modifier (in years past it was always 100%, even with a 3 rating).

What I've been told, and as mentioned by others, your merit increase is based on getting you closer to the midpoint of the market range for your title. IMO: Medtronic does not want to be compensation leaders in the medical industry; rather, they are content with being in the middle. If you really want a significant increase, you need to figure out how to get promoted to the next level.

Out of curiosity, I asked what it would take to get a 4. My manager said that for the few thousand $ you'd get, it's a significant effort needed for a 4. My manager also said that if you got a 3 this year, don't be surprised if you get a 2 next year, even with the same effort.

IMO: Your rating isn't a true rating if there is a restriction on the number of those ratings that can be applied. The criteria for each rating level also seems to change on a whim. For example, if your one-up or two-up manager/directory/VP is pushing AI, and if "AI" doesn't show up anywhere in your review at least 10x next year, then don't expect above a 2.

So I'm thinking, the only way to get a 4 or 5 is to independently come up with a way to increase revenue, or save money, to the tune of $500K or more. And, 2 is the new 3.

@jp
I couldn’t agree more! MDT is going down because of these entitled and lazy workers. If we get rid of these bottom 33%, the productivity wouldn’t go down. These lazy workers should be shown the exit door.

@OP
I would be looking for a new job if I were you. You will be RIFed next and targeted. You must did nothing to get a rating of 2. Think your 2 rating as a license to look for a new job. Don’t wait until next year.

@bm You don't get pay rises just for your years of service. You don't get to do the same job and be paid outside of the band. People like you are the reason that MDT is going down the sh----r.

Either leave and look for more money in another company, try to get promoted into a higher band at MDT, or shut tf up.

Rated a 3 with a 2.8% increase..103% MIP. Apparently 4s were extremely rare and VPs were told not to give 4s without significant justification.

Got a 2 rating with 0.5% raise and 0.93 MIP modifier. I see a RIF coming my way in 2027 or sooner.

Great review write up...above-expected impacts...get a 3 rating anyways with no real explanation. BS...some leaders were told no 4s this year.

Meanwhile the executives bonus is as big as my salary.

I got a 3 with a 2% raise because I’m apparently at the top of my pay band, but I’m actually not. I’m just riding the wave until one of the 10 companies I apply to daily gives me a chance.

As a leader it drives me crazy when they stand up in a town hall and say there isn’t a forced distribution. There absolutely is and it means that if you are lucky you might get one 4 per manager and you’ll likely be pressured to rank someone a 2 to offset it. Managers also no longer have any control over merit increases as they are entirely dictated by a formula or VP. If you enjoy your job, a 3 is a good outcome but don’t expect to stay above inflation if you are not seeking promotions or lateral moves.

3, 3% raise with doing 2 jobs and working my absolute butt off. verbally glowing review. my written review had what the site missed that I had no control over.

@bh yeah I got a 3 and received 2% same as last year. Apparently I’m near the top of the pay band for my level but I’d have to walk on water to be promoted. How demoralizing. They keep piling work on and giving measly raises that don’t keep up with inflation

I received a 3 this year but my merit increase was 2.5%…The jig is up.

Normally I try for a 4% but this year my mind was made up to "perform as excepted" and take the MIP. Well I got a 3 with a more then decent review and 100%+ MIP. Honestly its refreshing not to bust your azz all year just to be disappointed with a 3 rating and a MIP. Maybe this year I try for a 2% and possible RIF. Who knows maybe HR just flips a coin an you get what you get without any manager input, IDK anymore.

@an I am with you! A lesser % MIP payout is a fair trade off for letting go of the stress and late hours.

@OP I saw the KPIs last April and decided at that moment to not try for a 3 or a 4 and see what happens. Performance review was a 2, had glowing manager comments, a very low merit increase but a quite good MIP payout still. All went as expected but was pleasantly surprised with the MIP payout for "below expected impact" (LOL).
