Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Every 4 years you get to bid on your job at Shell

What’s the name of the latest layoff initiative?
How healthy for mental health is it to run an initiative to crop 12 staff every 4 years?

Yet the management is barely affected or penalized! The only balanced thing is that their children will face a darker and harder future…

At Shell, people are our most important assets, provided they are in the category of senior management.
All those other people, well, they are what we consider fungible assets.

Which group is it this time?

How will this reorg manifest itself this time? Or does Shell still have 10,000 pieces of deadwood 🪵? Typically production declines but, it seems it’s actually increasing. Do the consulting companies make bank every 3-4 years recommending these initiatives?

For sure. After the latest re-org, it seems all mangers (specifically middle mangers) have taken actual working roles. This of course left workers without a job. And normally this would be fine if indeed the manager could articulate how to perform the job and execute the job. But in reality over 90% of the managers may have (a long time ago) preformed a working roll previously, but really today (for assurance) cannot even do the most basic things required for the job. Call it what you want, but in my mind the re-org did not complete what it wanted to do, which was improve the business.

the root problem at shell is that mere line managers are way too powerful.

they can easily prevent their own firing. and when shell cuts this deep and this often, nobody is left who actually does work. it’s all of these kiss butt people person types.

so we major shed talent and keep bloat, which is the opposite of what senior leadership claims that we want. theory is own thing and practice is another, i suppose. if you’re a line manger here you have it made. send some emails and have teams on your phone and coast.
