Layoffs are happening, but so is hiring. Doesn't that completely defeat the purpose? And it's a slap in the face to the people who were let go.

It’s literally the point: Wage suppression
Last I checked there were only a couple hundred open positions in the company and MOST were in sales.
Layoff old overpaid and entitled and hire new young underpaid
Not if you think about it for just a second.
