Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

I just need a stable job that I can work for 5 years, but BNY layoffs every year to sc--w up people's life and planning.

What is the point working hard at BNY, since I will be layoff anyway.

For better success you should ask for it in standard English:

“So, I should say that I expect to be layed off after a year?

BS, @1gvr. We fired some a decade ago that included plenty of underachievers, but I today it massive firings rarely involve people that had BE.

BNYM does not layoff every year and hasn’t for a very long time. Yes, some people are displaced due to performance but the days constant layoffs ended around 2008. Job security has been pretty good here since then. People do need to understand that they just can’t mail it in and expect not to be dismissed based upon performance.

It’s amazing how often hat when a teammate is displaced the rest of the team generally agrees with the move and understands why they were picked. Not always, but usually.

We are required to put “below expectations” on reviews for at least 1 or 2 employees at end of year reviews. So when there are layoffs we will need to choose one of those employees. There is also a ranking system of each employee in each department per site. Ranking from 1-5 in each category. The lowest ranked will be considered for layoff.

Teams ought to be able to get their work done. Too much slacking and kibbutz ing at the water cooler.

The funny thing is during interview, they will ask you what is your 5 year plan? So, I should say that I expect to be layoff after a year?

I’d like to say that’s an overly dramatic view.

But having managed people at BNYM at a high level, I think your concerns are valid. I was constantly told to add employees to the layoff list, when any disappointment in their performance was really about staff being stretched too thin to accomplish what they needed.

It was tragically unfair and whenever I would raise it to senior management, they accused me of making excuses. I was only pointing out reality! If you cut ten percent then another eight percent then another six then another eight… and you continue to expect the same output or more… you’re crazy.

My people were terrible and busted their butts and it ended badly for many of them.
