Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

What happened to work-life balance?

Everything is competition nowadays, to the point where most employees are forced to extend work hours to appear competitive. This creates a negative work environment that completely drains employee energy and makes it increasingly more difficult to find motivation to get any of the work done. This is not sustainable.

There has never been “work/life balance” at the Bank and I doubt that there ever will be.

At least our layoff level is low these days so that does help out with the worries.

Everything is competition unless you're BK's compensation and benefits package. Then bottom of the barrel is good enough. A WalMart greeter has better benefits.

I balanced my sometimes 12 hour 'work' days with occasional WFH days where I could recharge my 'life' on the couch watching TV

Don’t be dense. It applies directly to the topic and concern which people were voicing, i.e. the worry that automation will do away with their jobs. Ned Ludd and his followers destroyed (then modern) archaic mechanisms so that they wouldn’t lose their jobs.

People have been fighting progress ever since in the mistaken belief that… in this case, Roman Regelmann, is going to automate them out of jobs.

It’s been 7, SEVEN YEARS since Regelmann set out to eliminate Faxes and Fax volume has doubled every year.

So don’t be a Luddite. Embrace tech innovation.

I for one never experienced “Work Life Balance” in my 40 years.

If you have it, congratulations, and you’ll be displaced.

Everything has been competition for at least 40 years here, to the point where most all employees are forced to extend work hours to be, not just to appear to be, competitive. Find a boomer and go to lunch with them. Ask for advice on coping.

It really was much tougher 40 years ago.

This creates a negative work environment that completely drains employee energy and makes it increasingly more difficult to find motivation to get any of the work done. This is not sustainable.

@gml, WTF does that have to do with anyone at BNYM?

@qat+1qClTcVb The parts of banking you're referring to have compensated their employees very well for their lack of work/life balance, although their bonus numbers for 2023 have been awful. Wealth Management employees are not paid top dollar on the PM side, and most have been ki-ling themselves for years covering for the lack of employees/resources their office would otherwise have. I'm not sure I understand why you feel people are being soft, or are you the type to grumble about lazy generations while standing at my desk asking me to convert a file from ppt to pdf?

Those who hold that Roman is going to automate with AI need to get a clue. Roman’s first deliverable was to be Fax elimination and seven years later there are more faxes than ever.

There has never been work/life balance in banking.

And there has never been such a fragile new generation in this country.

We're STILL waiting for Suresh's self driving cars. AI will certainly have a big impact, but there are WAY too many jobs that can't be replaced by AI and many that could would not be feasible. Remember when computers were supposed to eliminate everyone's job? AI is just a tool that will be integrated into the job stream l like the PC was.
Saying "most of the jobs will be replaced with AI soon" is extremely naive and short sighted. It's like saying robots were going to replace most GM workers 50 years ago. Sure, robots got rid of a lot of painters and welders, but they still employ 167,000 people not including suppliers and contractors.

They don’t care about work life balance. Most of the jobs will be replaced with AI soon. Managers will keep their favorites and letting go of the rest of the employees and the few that remain will be doing client on boarding and watching a dashboard for rejects or issues to resolve. Everyone can see this and are even talking openly on the office floors so loudly everyone can hear them. People either need to start looking for a new job or better start kissing your managers a-s so they can keep you around for longer time.

AI doesn't need work-life balance. AI robots will be able to work 24/7 (even on Christmas and New Years Day). Welcome to the future of human poverty and high crime.
