Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Why do they always cut the wrong people?

All of us know people who deserve to be laid off. This is a fact. So how come they are never the ones who are getting the pink slip and the good ones are? It's no different this time. Does anybody here know one employee they believe should have been laid off in this round who actually got laid off?

@1gti, it's forced RATINGS that people have an issue with. And rankings should be across the company, division or large groups.

Reread your post and see if it actually makes sense. It doesn’t.

You nailed it. The whole rating process is so inconsistent. For example, in 2023 several people on my team as well as myself were REQUIRED to complete a mandatory training and REQUIRED to pass the certification exam. The bank paid thousands of dollars for this. Some of these people were unable to pass the exam (open book) after repeated attempts. At EOY, they were all rated met expectations. IMO isn’t that the definition of failed to meet minimum requirements of your job? Guess who was rated partial though and terminated while management kept the incompetent favored.
The bank should revise their rating system to a single category of, “how much your manager likes you, “ to more accurately reflect how they actually rate you. 4. Not at all 3. Tolerates you for now. 2. I need you to do my work 1. Friend zone

Well the manager / upper management is bias
I believe they need certain level of training and anonymous performance evaluation from superior / peers to be qualify and maintain as a manager
If the review is not anonymous, I believe the truth will be hidden

@tgti

No, it really hurts the team.

In a team, not everyone is doing the same job so that it is not the same test to grade using a bell curve. That is height of st...ity.

So when one has to compete with each other in a team the there is no team. A firm cannot survive if everyone is for himself/herself. That is what the forced grading will result in. That is a fact and that is what you are witnessing in BNYM.

At the risk of stating the obvious, why aren’t you folks conducting a job search?

It’s finally a hot economy. Encouraging you to conduct a job search immediately, if not sooner. Identify the fears, the psychological issues and the self imposed reasons why you remain here.

I know of nobody who did not wind up far better after leaving the bank. Nobody.

This will be voted down, as all true facts are on this board, but if I encourage even one employee to escape I will be content.

@1gti+1quPLlUS Agree 100%. That’s assuming the managers themselves are decent quality which is often the problem.

I disagree. With forced rankings managers do identify the stars, the effective, the weakest performers, the non performers, etc. Only managers can do this as they know the tasks and priorities.

Are there poor managers? Yes, of course there are, and hopefully their managers will weed them out. Outside of teams of long time friends, which is a real issue, ratings are as honest as a manager can make it. Think about it… why would a manager want to lose the best workers?

They constantly axe the wrong people. The ones who should go remain and anyone that is semi good or better leaves on their own for more money or a better opportunity eventually. You’ll never win!

I knew from our town hall meeting in December, upper management was a bunch of id--ts. We had snowflakes on our presentation. I repeat, snowflakes like in kindergarten.

They keep the a$$holes. The ones that can start the ‘Quick Chat’ meeting with “So how was your weekend” and then proceed to tell you that they have bad news “they’ve eliminated your position.” They of course ask if you have any questions and mine was ‘How can you sleep at night?’

Up until yesterday, I HAD lots of years of employment with this company and could not imagine delivering that bullsh*t type of news to anyone, yet alone someone who has devoted all of those years performing at an acceptable or above average level. Remember less than some very small % exceed the performance BNYM expects of them.

I didn't receive a reply to my question, but hopefully it kept her up all night.

Well in our area it's all nepotism. The MD protects incompetent people who happen to be from the same country as him.
