Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

If you work at BNY Mellon, being laid off just might be the best thing for your career.

Just found this layoff board and I see people are expressing their worries about layoffs and complaining. My message to everybody is that cuts at BNY Mellon could turn out to be a blessing, especially for younger workers that have the thirst to explore other career opportunities

I worked at BNY Mellon for just under 5 years and my impressions of that place were less than poor. From the outside, it looks like a nice place to work, but when you start you find yourself in an environment full of demotivated colleagues who are working at the bare minimum of their possibilities and are stuck in their old ways, doing a job that pays less than the same job at any other peer, while dealing with uninterested management. I don't want to be all negative so I have to say that I was satisfied with the benefits and vacation.

The thing is BNY Mellon captures the worker in its routines, without any challenges or opportunities, giving you just enough pay to survive, and as you spend a couple of years working there, you gradually become a worker with limited career opportunities, due to lack of any challenging work or upgrading. Took me a lot of of-of time to find a new job after I quit, but now I couldn’t be any happier. Unless for the newcomers who want to learn the essence of banking I wouldn’t recommend working at BNY Mellon to anyone.

I was with BNYM for 17 years. The corporate culture is toxic, management has no imagination or ideas as to how to fix what’s wrong (“We need to be like Goldman Sachs” - despite the fact that Goldman has underperformed the banking sector for the past 10 years and their CEO has recently said he wants Goldman to be more like JPM) and there are no career opportunities. I’ve never been happier since I resigned.

Great place to work if you are already retired and just want some extra money on the side, or if you need some experience for your resume. Other than that you're wasting time.

Good description. Managers leave you to rot, then give you bad performance review for not inventing your own responsibilities. Then they lay you off.

It’s worst in TSG. They see all the disabled accounts and collect all the equipment from the laid off employees. The smell of despair hangs over the IT floors as they wait their turn on the chopping block.

Good summation. Vacation time and holidays were good. Benefits were pretty good except for health care.

Also, No opportunity for advancement, zero training, a merry-go-round of senior department leaders who left after a year or so, a permanent philosophy of eliminating people through automating functions, gold-bricking old-timers.
