From my experience it’s not usually merit based. I see people with half the experience and skill as others get title bumps.

Things often look more attractive from a distance than up close. Don’t spend more than two years in the same role or company, changing positions regularly is the fastest path to growth and higher pay.

“ The person most liked or stays long in the department gets the title.”
This is not true. Shoe shiners who play politics get most bonus & pay hike and title promotions. PERIOD
Title promotions are a popularity contest. The person most liked or stays long in the department gets the title.
Corporate Titles are a joke. Meaningless and cost nothing.
SVP has been so diluted, it's ridiculous. There are "real" SVPs and then the rest who are considered "Junior SVPs) (B4s -- looking at you, kiddos)
We promoted my entire team to SVP one year when bonuses suk'd and merit increases not permitted due to expense constraints. (sound familiar? same ole, same ole)
But to a lot of people, particularly juniors, titles are still important. Some think higher title comes with higher pay. (It does not, unless it is an actual job promotion -- functional title, not window dressing VP, SVP, etc. which are free)
I remember how great I felt making VP at 30, then SVP at 35. Both were hard-earned and felt good at the time.
But the Band increase means way more.
It was the actual job promotions with pay increase that really matter.
I could care less what my actual title is any more. Just pay me.
I thought the same about having to be a B4 to get an SVP title; however, I know of 4 associates who received the title that are not B4's.
You must be a B4 to get SVP. No pay increase when I went from AVP to VP and no increases for my directs that got title promotions. Just a "congratulations"!
The main thing I ever got from a title promotion was more assigned training.
Depending on your LOB you can see quicker promotions. If you are a SVP in my LOB you earned it. It’s not given lightly.
I’m my opinion, it goes to the ones that raise their hand for everything and makes sure their manager knows every little detail that they were successful in. For me, I do my job and I do it very well. I do extra things without asking and don’t make a big deal about it. I’m just not that way. Avp here but there’s no pay increase so I’m not changing my colors to get that title promotion. The one thing I will say is that some people don’t give the same respect to avp vs vp or SVP. Even though I know I make better decisions and am smarter than some of my VP peers.
@bk+1jmg1wvwt I had a co worker do the same. They want to listen when we all shared being an Officer, AVP, or VP gets you nothing and not to sweat the small stuff. She ended up crying after her EOY because she didn't get the title. It made for a very awkward rest of the day.
I was added "officer" to my title for B6. No pay raise, but excuse for management to give me more responsibilities. As others have stated, it is suppose to make me feel good. NOT!!!
Yes. Suppose to make you happy and forget about all the bs.
I had a coworker who was all bent out of shape about their AVP title vs VP. When it came time for promotion, the coworker was happy to take the promotion without pay! :-)
"I am just so glad I finally got the title."
🤓 LOL
Yes they are. No one pays attention to them only your position and if you are a manager or not. But they might look nice and spiffy to an outside company who doesn’t know better on your application.
Everyone in GIS is SVP so yeah.
Officer and AVP titles are now determined by HR. If you've been an E/M or M/E for the last 3 years, you receive a title. The manager has some input. I know of someone that got caught cheating on his work and he still received an AVP title.
Officer and AVP promotions are more of a joke than actual title promotions.
There are also time in seat promotions I recently heard about. So not all promotions are equal
They aren't a joke, but they tend not to be consistent between groups. In most cases they are prestige only, but often come with higher risk / liability. I haven't seen a situation where they come with any sort of compensation but it's possible.
