Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

I'm disappointed

I joined BNYM a year ago, and I was so excited to start. It was my second job, and I thought it would be an amazing experience. I'm not sure what happened; the last year has been a whirlwind of disappointment and fear. I'm so confused about what's going on at BNYM right now. Why are all these great coworkers with knowledge being let go? What happened to corporate culture? Where is the camaraderie? All I want now is to leave.

Legacy Mellon Vs Legacy BNY……this is a new evil not inspired by any of those people/views. We should let that go and band together! It has been 15 years. I am on one of those 2 “sides” working with folks from the “other side”. They pointed the finger to us, we did the same to them but even 15 years ago it was a new evil making it uncomfortable.

I joined about 3 years ago and was immediately disappointed. I thought I just needed to push through it and it would click, but after 3 years I decided to leave. It's honestly shocking how much better run my new company is.

The technology is better. The vibe is better. The intranet is useful and every link actually works. You call IT and it's actually an onshore person who speaks English. I have every piece of software I want, my computer is fast and the latest technology. The executives communicate their firmwide strategy and department heads host productive quarterly calls. Compensation is clearly communicated and your comp relative to the band is disclosed to everyone.

It makes me a little angry how bad BNY Mellon is, because I wasted 3 years of my career there.

Hit the nail on the head. One simply cannot get a good compensation package by being promoted internally. These cases only seem to qualify for the minimum of the next grade, while newcomers easily get midrange. Add 1-2% annual raises on top of that and various benefits reduction year after year…

10 year vet here that recently left to go somewhere else. Had growing career here, went up numerous grade levels, worked my way into management. Although I grew a lot, my salary was always towards the lower end and people from outside always came in more expensive. Companies should invest more in people like me but they don’t - we end up getting the most screwed. But BNYM makes things that much worse via how they delay promotions.

If you’re young, this place is a great stepping stone to something better after a few years. If you’re a high level executive, you can get a big pay bump and hang here for a few years til you decide to go back to JPM or GS. You’ll be a parasite for sure, but I would say that describes a good chunk of the senior leadership across operations and ASD

In our area, the leadership was constantly changing, as those brought in from the outside quickly learned that they’d been sold a bill of goods and they lacked the resources and executive support to succeed.

And the EC keep beating us up, wondering why we weren’t best in class in our function while continuing to reduce staff but not workload (and screaming at us and generally treating us with contempt).

The EC’s way of “fixing” us way to push out those with competence and institutional knowledge.

There was no way to succeed except by fleeing.

Honestly, a business 101 class could see that reward systems, org structures, leadership strategies, etc. were poorly aligned and would only degrade performance.

I enjoyed many of the years with the firm, but last, say, five years were hideous.

Well the larger dummies bought the smaller smart bank, dragged them backwards 20 years to their beloved Lotus Notes and Inform and displaced them. So ever since 2008 the higher you go up the chain the less knowledge, competence and experience you find.

How could anybody be happy here except the dummies?

In EDM I had a Leader who left to go to another bank. He was exceptional as a leader, drove the team, and respected us, drove us hard, and treated us all with respect. He was a visionary. We all miss that now. But here we remain.

We had a leader that came up through the company and loved the firm and the employees. He could be strict when needed and made some tough calls. He retired and now we have someone that is indeed disrupting the firm to place his stamp on it. As a new employee, it is up to you now to carry the torch of change. The rest of us are too tired to go thru this again.
