Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Transformation of a workaholic culture

When I first got a job here, I realized that this place fosters a workaholic culture. Employees are encouraged to take pride in their workaholism. Then that culture began to transform into something equally bad - truly hard workers became less and less valued, while BNY Mellon became a place where the most important thing is pretending to work hard and acting important. This is just my impression.

LBNY side?

Is that a new affinity group or something?

It’s never been a terribly work/hard play hrs culture. But there have been some that worked hard.

The difference now is that many are working hard on meaningless things. While those that have worked hard in the past have managed the work/life balance skill.

Wow. I’d have a very difficult time saying I love my job when I’m not being compensated for a lot of my hours worked & have no work/ life balance.

I work to live. It’s nothing more than a paycheck to me.

32 years for me and I’ve yet to experience any work life balance whatsoever, except that I can now work at home on the weekends. On the bright side I love my job, am really proud of my career and numerous industry firsts in technology.

I have many more years here than you and can tell you it was this way at the firm for a very long time. The work/life balance was very good, pay was lower and on the LBNY side, layoffs were few and far between unless a business was being sold. So we accepted the lower salary as a trade-off.

Now the balance is not so good and pay is still low! I suspect that many of the new hires coming from outside are not experiencing low pay (why would they leave higher paying firms and job to come here?). There is no way to fix that other than leaving to go to a higher paying firm. Since the stress and work hour commitment is the same, why not?

When I joined out of college, the atmosphere was slow-paced and while you wouldn’t get paid as much, you could enjoy better work life balance. That was over 8 years ago. Now, the work intensity has gone up. GOLDMAN, JPM, Citi work you hard but at least you get paid a lot more. Here, not only do wages rise st a glacial pace, benefits continue to dwindle.
