Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

For people who care so much about in office time

I have a question for those who support increasing in-office hours, and even criticizing the others: Do you own the company or hold a significant amount of stock? Why are you so concerned with what is good for the company? And why are you criticizing us for not working hard? We can manage our own performance reviews. If we’re not productive while working from home, we’ll face the consequences like being put on a PIP or getting fired. Why are you helping the executive team create rules that make life miserable for us, the regular employees? If you’re so passionate about being in the office and working hard, why not start your own business? Then you can create any in-office rules you want, even requiring people to come in seven days a week if that’s what you prefer. Seriously, the rule makers are not even meeting the requirements. Why are you barking like a watch dog?

This version aims to convey your point in a clear and straightforward manner, maintaining a professional tone.

Folks, you worked 5 days a week at Office before Covid. Coivd did not give you extra brain cells to show case the effectiveness of WFH and increase in productivity. Now that Covid is history why cannot the bank (the employer) enforce the requirement - which you agreed upon when you landed this job - to work in office for 5 days.

It is called an EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT and YOU SIGNED IT.

Now you are changing the rules (which you have already ceded to the employer when you signed the contract stating that you will abide by the employers legally conforming policies.

WHO IS AT FAULT ?

No one is stopping you from leaving This is simple and straightforward - even an Univ of Phoenix grad can comprehend. Why is it so difficult for the Ivy League properly pigmented ilk ?

In a way having this newly minted entitlement mindset is the one that is causing misery for the employer and indirectly to YOU. Go back to Office 5 days a week and no one is going to question you. May be you will end up producing even more with the extra efficiency COVID virus gave you in the last few years.

This thread seems to be more than a little paranoid. Nobody but your manager is worried about your days in office and highly doubt that coworkers are checking up on you. And nobody has lots of BNY stock except the executive suite.

“Don’t let the responses here fool you. They aren’t here pushing the corporate narrative as workers. This is clearly a case where the folks higher up caught wind of this site and like the incompetent bumbling corrupt fools they are, are having their minions come on here to pretend like BNY is just some great place to work, and the people here are just bitter or don’t do their work. It’s a farce - clients are already heading towards the exits. The good people are gone or on their way out.”.

You have a vivid and quite paranoid imagination. I see a black Ops helicopter just outside of your window now. Good luck…

“Doesn’t the CMO work (/berate employees) from the West Coast?”

Dude, a CMO is a Collateralized Mortgage Obligation. Like the ones that almost sank the Bank from 2000 to 2008.

Allow me to guess… University of Phoenix Grad?

Actually the Bank had to enforce RTO because productivity fell dramatically during COVID. You can whine all you want but you bad apples spoiled it for all of us.

Now the adults have to suffer with the children.

Isn’t it interesting that those who report to RV can choose to have different RTO requirements? Control Freak Emily is ruining her teams.

Are you saying they aren’t having the same issue in India? I’m pretty sure when I’ve talked to my team in India that they leave early like us and work from home a couple days a week too. Not sure if it’s the whole team or higher level people on the team. I’m pretty sure they told me that they didn’t have access to certain programs that can only be accessed from the office because the whole team was home at the same time. I hope they’re being treated the same as us and being let go if they aren’t complying with in office requirements. My team at least rotates who’s in the office.

Now that Walmart has initiated the EVERYONE 5 DAYS AT WORK or LEAVE others will soon follow despite the fact that the "smart people" may scream and cry. The writing is on the wall. They want you to commute, they want you to fund the local economy and they want you in the office.

You WILL produce either way or will lose your job. That threat is going to work out in their favor. Whatever you say, there are others to fill up your position either in US or in India. If you believe you are indispensable - THINK AGAIN.

The unfortunate aspect of this, BEFORE the COVID culture crept in, we all had a FWA (Flexible Work Arrangement) and with Manager's approval could work 2 days from home and as many days if the condition demanded. There was no policing (yes there were abuses) but also it was honor based. Especially with India Ops involved we avoided commuting during the peak hours and/or left early.

Now that "arrangement" is lost. Managers are more watchful but the India time did not go away. The abusers of the WFH and RTO basically ruined it for others.

The ask is simple. If you cannot comply, please LEAVE than making it even harder for those who NEED the job (for whatever reasons)

I think it’s hilarious that the higher ups would say the point of being in the office is for “breaks”. Whoever gets a break?

I think that for some of us, it is a little bit of both jealousy and anger. I am tethered to the office full times 3 days a week and not brave enough to take my chances leaving before the end of the day knowing that the company could start holding us accountable at any time. I also know that my boss plays by the rules 100% and would not defend me or take my side regardless of the reason I may leave.

Maybe I am the fool…..don’t respond I already know the answer.

@2ytf YES!!! It’s one of the top reasons why I quit this place. It was a waste of my time, money and effort to come into an office 3x a week where I only met with people via Teams because I was the only person on my team there. And all the anxiety over layoffs and demoralizing RTO dashboard. My position is being replaced, but only in a growth center. So I actually did them a favor. It’s what they wanted - to shrink my office. No open postings here. You’re welcome, BNYM.

Even the company’s own reasons for RTO contradict themselves. There’s an faq out there somewhere about being the only person on the team in a particular office. The answer is to allow them to engage with other coworkers either by meeting in the break room or other places. So then why are the other offices being closed to prevent all coworkers from mingling? Now they are basically saying “Come into the office and collaborate with people not on your team thereby wasting time and being less productive”. If all we are doing is talking to our team via MS Teams because we are the only ones on our team in a particular location, it shouldn’t matter where we are sitting.

It’s a farce - clients are already heading towards the exits. The good people are gone or on their way out. All you have left are the sorely incompetent leaders, the senior people right below them who are carrying out the leadership’s company destroying agenda, and sadly the rest of us who are stuck in this mess, wondering if tomorrow it’ll be us. Best and only advice is to get out at the first opportunity you get. If you stay and don’t get cut, you’ll be forced to take on the work of the 10 people they did let go, and then be gaslighted into thinking you are performing poorly and not overloaded. Life will become he-l for you one way or another.

“ And why are you criticizing us for not working hard?” because someone has to do the work and managers shift work to us because you slackers don’t do your damn work. Not everyone has to be in office 5 days a week but I heard a conversation about a few slackers will soon be told to be in office 5 days a week based on their BE dismissal performance. Be warned
