Underpaid in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh staff, especially in Ops, are pretty underpaid.

I left a team where most Ops staff were making about $40 to 50K, many with 10+ yrs tenure, without any added incentive and overtime was admonished.

Any staff promotions were pretty bad, while management was promoted.

Pittsburgh staff, especially in Ops, are not degreed positions and are generally clerical. Pay is very fair.

I worked in PGH on various teams in the same general group for nine years until I quit in January. In that time period my salary increased a little over 20% but if you discount the larger bump they doled out in the third quarter of '21 because of Covid to make our pay rates more "competitive" with other institutions, it's well under 20% and averaged about 1.8% a year.

And it's now evident that as 2022 went on and the cost of living has gone through the roof, that Covid pay increase quickly became unsubstantial.

The real kicker is that the lowball wage is only a part of why I quit. What sealed the deal for me going out the door was some ivory tower manager evidently made the decision that the team I was on that had ten members in 2018 was reduced to six by 2021 and those of us left were required to double our efforts and pick up the slack.

Hmm, let's see... Insulting pay raises, AND increased workloads. Yeah, that's a good policy to retain your staff. Good luck with that BNYM...find some other su---r.

They will never take care of employees who decide to stay and who always hope they company will reward them for staying. Won’t happen here, won’t happen there, won’t happen anywhere.

Some folks here have been successful in getting a counter offer to stay. But at that point, someone would be foolish to stay.

I can't say if this is true or not, but I have a visible disability and inadertently on year, I found out that I was paid near the bottom of my pay grade at BNYM. I questioned my low salary based on my work in several of my yearly reviews, but nothing was ever done about it.

This is the experience of just one person, so it doesn't prove or disprove that my disability had anything to do with it and I never suspected that it did, but this post caught my attention.

Been here 20 years in a front office role and only making 80k. So for someone in Ops back office making 50k for half the tenure sounds like they are being paid decently.

If they're in ops they should be non-exempt unless their primary duty includes the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance.
I'm sure we'll be sued for this eventually.

You could probably get a decent raise if you left and then came back a year later to do a similar job. Attrition is through the roof these days and they need to pay more to replace those who left. But what about the people who stayed? They need to make them whole, too.

Underpaid in NYC and Boston if your manager is located in PGH.
You are told that your salary is very high, and then penalized on merit and bonus for being in a high cost location.
