Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Layoffs during paternity leave

Hello, I'm currently on parental leave and will be returning to office in SLC (operations role) on August 3rd. It sounds like there are layoffs set to occur the day I return. Now, this isn't something I would normally even consider - but my grandmother did in fact pass away while on leave, so I could technically apply for bereavement leave for the day of layoffs (yes I know this won't save me forever, but hey, why not get an extra two weeks of pay).

  1. I don't know for sure if I will be one of the ones cut on August 4th, but I know I have ~1 year at most due to the location strategy.

  2. Yes, I can in fact provide proof of my grandmother's passing as I am a direct inheritor of her (very small) estate.

Just curious to see what everyone thinks about this idea.

@OP Bereavement leave is, in fact, an employee benefit. If someone died within whatever could be deemed a reasonable time frame of when you would like to take it then go for it. I would not take into consideration that it may or may not prevent you from being displaced.

The only safe haven to protect against layoffs is to reside in India. Bereavement situations definitely do NOT protect you - Wells Fargo will literally call and lay you off (or fire without severance due to a fake performance rating) when you’re actually enroute to a family member’s funeral - this level of cruelty is a true function of working here, not a glitch. Charlie hates us. The board hates us . Charlie’s directs hate us. we’re livin the well life

Not everyone in ops is subject to location strategy. That said, yes, eventually all domestic employees will "go".

@OP strategize all you want. But surely you have to know you’re up against a system that doesn’t care about you as a person. Greed, ignorance, and stupidity is running rampant around here and seems to work well with this kind of management.

All of Ops will be laid off in SLC. This plan won't do a thing.

@an Ha. I single handedly modernized the entire group's tech stack. Built in automatic data pipelines and data flows, removed 15+ years worth of technical errors. I could not work another day, and the millions of dollars worth of value they get back annually will continue for years. This is me looking out for #1. Losing a position over location strategy rather than contribution is the problem here. :)

if you are on bereavement, it's the same as being on PTO. you will still be called and displaced on the day of.

(BTW better check TW or HRSS - last I recall grandparents weren't covered under bereavement leave)

Won't change anything, though if your lob uses a working notice it would get you out of 2 weeks of that.

Being on bereavement doesn't exempt you from a layoff or move out the date. They'll just call you. I had a friend who was laid off while on vacation at Disney.
