Thread regarding IBM layoffs

ALBANY TOWN HALL - Friday 7/26

Long-time reader, first-time posting. I was planning to post yesterday only, but I just came back from travel.

After yesterday’s town hall, I am still having many questions. It answered many things, but not the questions most people were actually asking. There were plenty of buzzwords and positive statements, but not much real clarity.

I am still not understanding the Alderon split properly. What will remain with IBM? What will move to Alderon? On what basis these decisions are being taken? Even after the town hall, I don’t have a better understanding.

Also, it looked like the usual favorites are getting special treatment. From what I could understand, many of those people will remain with IBM, while everyone else is still not knowing what will happen with their future. Maybe there are valid reasons behind these decisions, but they were not explained clearly.

Just wanted to know what others are thinking. Did this town hall give you more confidence, or did it leave you with even more questions? Are you feeling more secure about your job after listening to it? Interested to hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions

I will say communications of what is going are absolutely terrible. But at same time a half assed effort is being made. It’s odd. I don’t think they have it figured out themselves which is very alarming and concerning. But yes my impression is transparency is nonexistent and they are fumbling through it all now.

@gp and @h0 Yes, sorry. I am OP. I was rushing while posting. I meant 6/26. My mistake. Sorry for the confusion.

@d9 Yes I am still hoping to hear genuine answers to my questions from people in Albany.

OP is clairvoyant. They speak about a meeting that won't take place for another month - 7/26. (Someone had to point this out...)

@dw :

I never thought abuse of H1 was that rampant - Not only take away the jobs of US citizens but also shut down the voice that we would have raised. This is part of a bigger plot to gradually eliminate senior level folks who could have asked some tough questions, by PIPing them out, and bring in junior level guys who would be forever grateful to IBM for they could find someone in this tough market to offer employment.

Should someone contact DHS and invite ICE to Albany ?

Seems like an immigration style racket running there courtesy of Arvind Krispy-Kreme and his Pipmunks.

@d9 What did you expect? The culture in Albany has become deeply conditioned and brainwashed or groomed. A huge portion of the workforce is on work visas, so very few are willing to speak out publicly or challenge leadership. When your immigration status depends on your employer, staying quiet often feels like the safest option. It modern day indentured servitude.

That’s why so many of the behaviors people complain about continue unchecked. Leadership knows there’s little risk of internal pushback because most people simply can’t afford to rock the boat. So it continues. They have eat sh-t, smile, thank the leadership and ask for more - or else! Same leaders with their same favorites pulling the same cr-p- wash, rinse, repeat.

I am re-posting a message, magically deleted few minutes ago:
IBM is the most mismanaged company in the last quarter century compared to
AMD, NVDIA, APPLE, MICROSOFT, .... . Even Intel ended up being in a better shape.
Compare these companies for the last 25 years.
The verdict is clear, IBM is mismanaged and run by a cabal of incompetents and thieves.

IBM is a textbook example of mismanaged company in the last quarter century. Go back, 25 years ago and look back at IBM, Apple, Microsoft, nvidia, amd and few others. Even intel is better managed.

@cr
And do they count the people who leave? The number is an accounting trick for sure

@OP :

When it comes to future, one thing is certain at IBM. If they don't need you, they have a special place called bench. You will then automatically be given a PIP as if this was your fault, and then expected to achieve impossible targets. You will get a system generated email that would say 73% of IBMers who were placed on a PIP successfully accomplished their PIP and continued to grow at IBM. You will hope that you are in the 73% bracket only to realize that this is a misleading number when your job terminates.

@aj sometimes it’s to just take the exit plan. When I was there I was so scared there wouldn’t be a layoff because I was so scared of going on a pip and wanted to be laid off rather than fired so I left

I have been through 5 or 6 reorgs in the past 3 to 4 years. The same leaders shuffled around and reshuffled around. It is not a stable environment. I suspect more churn is the foreseeable future. At this point, the best move is to have an exit plan in your back pocket, buckle up, and just go for the ride as long as you can. There’s not much else we can do.
