I still don't understand why someone who was an excellent employee gets laid off, while someone who only pretends to work is still there.

This sicko never stops.
They cut "the best" people that know what they are doing because management is incompetent and they don't want anyone smarter than them around to call them out!
I’ve only rarely seen what you’re expressing. Usually when someone is displaced the team understands why. Perhaps what confuses the matter is that often it’s the most well liked individual on the team, but not the best worker.
The quicker you understand you are number 49756, the better it will be for you.

Good people generally earn more. That immediately puts a spotlight on them when the grim reaper comes calling. This is why mediocrity prevails at BNYM. The talent either leaves or gets axed, leaving mostly so-so performers.

Politics play a large role. That’s what happened to my last manager. He was well-liked by many and rose up through the ranks to L or M over the many years I worked with him. Once we got a new MD, he was forced out because she hired her own people.
A lot of times, layoffs are based on job classes. It’s often K and L grades.
You’re being delusional. That is a rarity if it weee to happen like that and all my years here never known it too . They are always cutting people who know the processes and work hard. Then keep the goof off , slackers
just because someone get's fired it doesn't always mean what you think it does. who knows, some folks here privately talk to their managers and ask to be selected as a target so they can get severance and take a break or retire.
Are you referring to those who are legends in their own minds? In my experience they usually do displace the team members that aren’t carrying their load. Not always of course but usually.
