Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Why work for a company you hate?

Wouldn't many of you be much happier to find a job somewhere else? This is an honest question. If I hated this place as much as some of you do, I wouldn't be here anymore.

It’s for the same reason that the highest priced seats at the Indianapolis 500 are on the most dangerous turns. And why do people watch a train wreck? Although I want the Bank and all employees to do well, I’m constantly disappointed by both management and employees.

So sorry that you’ve made that decision. I’ve only seen rich kids do well on this path, but hope that it works out for you.

We’re finally coming out of a three year recession. Unemployment is near record lows. Inflation remains as an issue, but that only means to you that if and when you decide to leave you’re guaranteed a nice increase. It’s the hottest job market since 2017 Trump era start.

Suggest that you self examine to determine the source of your fear of conducting a job search. Don’t let your fears define you, unless you know them to be accurate. If they are accurate resolve to address the issues.

I hope that you make this your New Years resolution and Good luck to you.

You must be confusing me with two different people posting. Don't worry, I will eventually find happiness outside of the bank. I have been on the job search and hoping for the best.

At the risk of stating the obvious, you were complaining that there were no opportunities and you weren’t looking. Hope that I helped in some small way to kick you into gear for a job search.

Nothing is stopping me. I have updated my resume and am applying for jobs. I am not leaving until I have another job or I get laid off(which seems inevitable). I am looking for a job the exact opposite of what I do now. I have given over 23 years to this place. I have learned a lot from this place but there are many reasons why I want to leave.

Your writing is extremely convoluted and difficult to understand. Have you considered that the three or four (impossible to determine) people to whom you wrote these letters may have been as confused by your your word salad letters as are we who are reading them here? I suspect that they were scratching their heads.

You’re actually correct that not everyone has the luxury of being experienced for many other jobs. The point that you’re missing is hat you need to work your tail off to acquire skills to be experienced for many jobs and this is how you should be working your tail off from 16 to 26 to become experienced in many jobs.

What’s stopping you?

——I don’t have that luxury but I am sure as he-l not wasting my life with this place. Being happy and not miserable is all I care about. Yeah it is hard to change since I have been with this company for so long but it needs to be done. I am finally going to follow a quote I heard a while ago ‘work to live, not live to work’

As the song goes… “They smile in your face… all of the time they want to take your place, the back stabbers, back stabbers…. They might be your neighbors.”

This organizational pattern is found in all of recorded history.

People have trouble getting out of their comfort zone. I've been there. This was my first job out of college and things started off great. I rose through the ranks, built relationships, and learned new skills/experiences. But at the same time, things were slowly taken away, layoffs were starting to hit close to home, and office politics became more prevalent. Still, it was hard to leave because good managers and business partners made it still comfy here. The longer you're here, the scarier it may feel to start fresh at a new place. Once I left to find something better, I kept kicking myself for taking so long to leave as I did.

The old boiling frog story. For most of us, it's a slow boil. For me, getting my first bad manager in 2022 cranked the heat up and forced me out of that pool. Sometimes bad people are a blessing in disguise.

How about asking why a company would treat their employees worse and worse?

Yeah I hate it here that is why I am trying to get out but I want a career change. I am done with banking and big corporate companies. I just want to be happy and it isn’t about the money anymore. I dread working here everyday.

Very naive question to ask.

Everyone can see the job market isn’t “hot” and hasn’t been all year long, with constant layoffs and rumors of a recession. People are staying here until the job market picks up. So yes, one foot out the door.

I had a director say “why work for a company you hate”. I told them because when I started I liked working there at the time and over the years that changed and if I left I would owe a decent sum of money to leave. If I was given the decent sum I would have left.

I later got the offer and left. The director asked if there was anything they could have done to kept me. I emailed a pre-written list, emails showing how nasty she was to workers, and the accomplishments I was responsible for that her boss praised with my name in the actual pieces of the product to her and CCed her manager in the email. I also attached a list of employee emails and team messages that want to leave as well.

I left BNYM and make more than double now and almost done paying off student loans and getting ready for my first home purchase.

Very low unemployment and easy to get a job with a sweet raise. Something is stopping you… self examine honestly and remove your mental barriers. Then move.

Well, I need the paycheck for now and also silently destroy the BNY efficiency; then I jump ship in the market. I will return the hate when I jump ship from BNY. Get it?

The job market has been hot all year and virtually everyone with talent has left.

You’re rationalizing your fear of leaving.

I left and actually getting to work in a good environment now. Thank God for that. But this company gets the honor of giving me an experience of working in the most political corporate environment. People will talk behind your back here and they will have no qualms destroying your reputation. In the department I worked in, you have to watch every single word you say, anything can and will be used against you. They all appear very friendly but reality is otherwise. There is a culture of backstabbing and extreme favoritism. Rampant unprofessionalism. If you are not part of someone’s inner circle, expect no promotions/raise/challenging assignments..you will be forgotten.
