Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Remember, you are in charge of your life

You should always be looking for a new job. Whether you are planning to quit or not and whether you are worried about layoffs or not. That's how you remain the master of your own destiny. If you are simply waiting for layoffs and not being proactive, you are giving somebody else the power to run your life.

Unlikely that a CFA would help you. You may see people from China studying for a CFA but what does China have to do with it and why would a CFA keep you from a layoff if you’re working in an unrelated role? If you’re not in school and are much older your career is likely already in the book.

It reads like you’ve enjoyed your life with hobbies and pastimes which is great. As a late bloomer, the best advice is to look at the things that you’ve loved to do… your favorite hobbies and pastimes over your life and search for related jobs. We are all subject to the choices that we’ve made but the future is wide open. Good luck!

I usually see everyone coming from China studying CFA.

Will pursuing CFA help me regarding to prevent layoff on my role? I am not in school and also much older, that I am not sure if it is a worthwhile investment.

@pwh+1iPvSb6j - so I guess my being laid off never actually took place if by what you are saying that layoffs never happen. What world do you live in to think there have been no layoffs at BNYM? Just this year there have been over 1000.

Agree 100%. I would add to that - staying at a job for more than 2 years is essentially like taking a pay cut. It's more obvious during these high inflation times, but even during normal inflationary periods, most companies (not just BNYM) don't bother rewarding long-standing employees with good raises.

If income growth is one of your goals, you are much better off changing jobs every 2-3 years. This is my personal experience and the data backs this up: https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/09/switching-jobs-can-lead-to-higher-pay-heres-what-to-know.html

I like this message. It is positive, reality based. Really a welcome break from the psychosis of obsessing over layoffs that never come while simultaneously staying with the hope of being among them. People here have their minds twisted up into pretzels.

I totally agree. Each of us are the masters of our own career. Each of us must identify what our career path is and be responsible for not only ourselves but for our families, please manage your career accordingly. Don’t wait for somebody to come along and tap you on the shoulder.
