MIDDLE MANAGERS - THE REAL FAT

I can’t with them anymore. They do 0 - just delegate and then get credit for others’ work.

WHY DO WE NEED THEM AGAIN?

This cr-p company got rid of my extremely knowledgeable and helpful manager and replaced him with one of the do nothing types being described. Much respect to the managers that have spoken up here because I am well aware that there are hard working managers within the company. Still, I think this topic has merit.

Sounds like the last two posters are group leaders or supervisors, not managers.

I think there is confusion now with managers because i was a supervisor and when they did all the name changes, a lot of us supervisors got "moved" to manager with zero pay increase because we had reports. Believe me i dont make anything near the 140k never mind the mention of 200k below by someone. And to agree with the other person, im a working manager as well. Not only do i have to babysit grown adults daily and continuously tell them to log on on time, but also have a full days worth of work since im also processing as well. Not to mention get calls from all my employees at any given time to be their personal therapist for any issue in their life including on the weekends. I haven't quit since i enjoy work with my team and helping them hopefully advance their career so im not complaining about the above but i certainly am not getting overpaid and not doing anything. There prob are those out there but don't lump us all together.

@yjq+1c4PyU29 - you don’t understand why mgrs get paid more? Well with the exception of a handful as you experienced , us mgrs do way more than our role and have to put up with way more than we should from lazy employees. Sorry, but I know my sections processes, I do the work and I have to monitor adults constantly who cannot arrive on time or do work at all. So it’s fair to say some mgrs don’t get paid nearly enough

Yes there are some lazy and only delegate because they feel that’s all they should do , but others such as myself do a lot more than most admins so I feel opposite. Why do we need admins? My job isn’t to babysit which I constantly have to do and my job isn’t to do the admins job on top of my own so it’s a two way street and definitely not an issue that falls only on mgrs

My manager in treasury services is the biggest waste of space. Would be away from computer for hours at a time and gave zero input or direction ever. It’s really pathetic.

I like the comment regarding the need for upward feedback. What is it that we can do about it? How do we flag this to someone anonymously?

The levels of management is ridiculous. I was a VP senior developer with over 30 years experience and had 6 people between me and the CEO. You'd think we had a few million employees or something.

I noticed that employees do not get a chance to provide upward feedback allegedly due to the fact that managers of smaller teams might realise who is saying what.
But this shouldn’t mean that we don’t get a chance to give feedback at all???
Make the managers’ pmp open for feedback from his direct reports, as well as his peers and superiors. Let it be anonymous. Let us expose them once and for all !!!!!!!

Work from home might be eliminating Middle manager's role and a lot of organization is looking towards it. Here's McKinsey report.

All great points made here and rarely spoken within. I had a what they now call a team lead who was just like what was described. We came up with the ideas and he ran with them and took all the credit. Spent most of the time kissing upper managements a-s and bad-mouthing other employees in other departments but never looked at what they were doing. Let me not forget to mention that this person was intelligent to a fault and confused you more than was humanly possible. Made a simple thing into a puzzle. Management definitely needs to trim the fat with some these middle managers the firm tends to keep to do the dirty work. Also don't let them tell you they have nothing to do with giving you a negative feedback on your mid-year and year-end reviews. That's how upper management determines who stays and who goes. The ones who should be compensated fairly are the ones who are actually doing the work that keeps the department running.

Yes, and yes and yes! My manager is outrageously paid at least 200k AND HE IS NOT EVEN A COACH! He does not know anything about the job and this means that when he tries to justify his salary by attempting to give instructions he only creates confusion and wastes everybody’s time.

WHYYYY ARE THEY GETTING PAID?

I don't understand why people think managers should earn more than workers. My managers weren't capable of doing my job. It's totally different work. Kinda like coaches compared to the actual players. Since coaches have the ultimate responsibility , should they be payed more than players? The answer is no.

I left the bank strictly because of my manager who was extremely incompetent. Had zero understanding of the day to day and always took credit for my work. This is someone probably making 140k which is essentially like throwing money out the window. The bank really should focus on trimming the fat and take care of the employees who are ensuring the actual work is done.
