In my team there are so many people off sick due to work. The manager heading this team was a disaster an absolute waste of space. We had a great team but he managed to destroy the team and then changed roles. That didn't stop him from sending work my way. A new person who joined the team has been complaining about how the team is run and how the senior manager in the US doesn't care about the team. I cant wait to retire. I wont have to put up with incompetent managers like this.

BNY has become a place now where employees can hold their jobs only if you know your manager or your managers manager - even if you are a high performer they will kick you out to make place for their friend who might not be qualified and will not even have domain knowledge - hey but it’s a private party going on in BNY everyday who cares any more about the clients or good work!!
When management make a designation who should stay and who should leave based on personal relationship rather than work ability and contribution than something wrong with such management.
I am a manager that was never given a choice to be a manager. I was told that it was my new job, and people were assigned to me. SHOCK. But that they way it can happen.
So I gave it a while, took courses and tried my best. Got great upward feedback. But I’ve had no control over BNY policies. My only choice is to leave, which I will when it becomes intolerable OR they lay me off.
- 1cdu & everyone else that is complaining: You should ALL leave the firm.
Yes, why do you remain with the firm? I have no sympathy for managers without integrity. You are contributing to the toxic culture to save your own neck. There are several things you can do to create a healthy working environment. The managers I have seen at BNYM are not trained nor experienced to manage (not all of course) teams, their lack of experience makes matters worse. If you can not do the job properly why agree to it.
Dear Manager, My sympathies. As a downsized manager of 8-10 I was given ZERO latitude regarding workflows, assignments, team structure and ZERO sign-off on raises and bonuses. Of course, I had to write 8-10 reviews. And then I was TOLD what each person's rating would be. DISGUSTING, isn't it?
Its seems like the original poster is commented on the incompetence of the manager instead of policies.
1dcu - I hear you, but why do you remain with the firm?
I am a manager and tired of people holding me accountable for things that are out of my control, or even my influence. We are the target for a lot of company policies that affect us too and we don’t even agree with them, but cannot say that. There, I said it.
I have asked to be removed from the manager role, and return to an individual contributor. But the company has laid off so many managers (when they reduced layers) and no one even wants to be a manager these days, since it isn’t even a promotion.
Maybe everyone can just report to the CEO or whoever else is responsible for the BNY policies that are making our work lives so dysfunctional.
