Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

BNY Mellon Stars

I am curious to understand how the entire Star Performance nomination process work . Do managers handpick these employees to be the next role model of this company . Do they assign projects to team mates as they require sufficient approvals from the risk officer o carry on with a improvement project that would save million lives in the organization. I am asking this question coz I have done 2 projects that would bring a difference to my people .I have never got the visibility neither the manager was interested to take it forward and no doubt I am just a experiment for the next project I am going to handle. So is it what they want to show the whole world or the managers discretion to make you influential and the next role model for the company . Charlie wants us to learn from these role models but does he even understand how the bureaucracy in the organization work.

I was told I won a award, not on Charlie’s list and let go Friday. Great bank!

I see people giving the best of them every day (eventhough the atmosphere got bad). Those STARS are a joke. It's the manager who decides, there are no measurements or facts. CS may say we have to use facts but this process is far from it. Maybe it could be based on number of comments on MSS... that's probably the closest to the truth. I hope they enjoy their trip, training and dinner - for others in the company it just gives the wrong image... Do things right please: if you want to give something to outperformers make sure these are truly outperformers and not friends of the management.

The star awards are based on a nomination by your manager. You have to be a 'yes' person and smile on demand....in other words you need to be weak enough to dance to the bny music. Some of the stars are an absolute joke. Oh it also helps if you are a member of WIN. Looks good for our false leaders.

The stars program is a way to try and lock-in talent without paying them. It is a reasonably commonly used management tool used to award human capital with prestige instead of monetary value. Those that receive it are probably underpaid.

Only BNYM Stars fall from the sky! There is nothing earth shattering or special about them. It’s a big joke like the WOW points.

Don't foolish yourself. I was Application Team Leader when first reconstruction happened. I did team leading for many years. But when my time come I surprisingly become individual contributor and when I look at my title it was Specialist Developer, not even senior (nobody never inform me about this changes).

I don't think you want it. I heard the bank used to fly all the recipients of the award to some fancy location and then the winners would end up having to pay the taxes of the "gift" they got. basically if they fly everyone to florida, you'll pay the taxes on the airfare, accommodations, etc.

There's a rat in my kitchen what am I gonna go?
I'm gonna fix that rat that's what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna fix that rat

When you open your mouth you don't talk, you shout
And you give every body the blame
But when they catch you up they will shut you up
And you got no one to blame !!!!"

Stars are picked by the MD for the specific business line. Typically it's done as a justification to promote next cycle

It’s a good question. As a manager, I have never been asked for a candidate. I suspect the selection pool includes only those that rated as a 1. I have been told in the past by a very good manager that I should have been considered for one of these awards, but I suspect I was not nominated.

Kudos to the award winners and don’t mean to take away from their merits ....but some transparency around the process would be good.

BNY stars are the opposite of teamwork. They showcase people that are then resented by the rest of the workforce. Lose/lose. Wait a while, then ask one and see how they feel about it.

Better yet, look at some older lists of superstars and see how many are still here. Some leave on their own, others laid off. So there seems to be no great benefit to being a star here.

Unless they got a really good bonus, but that doesn’t seem like the sort of thing BNY would do.
