Ratings don’t matter when LO are determined above your manager...

When layoffs are determined 1 step above your manager, as they often are, then ratings usually matter little.

I was under the impression that layoffs were determined by HR or someone other than my manager.
When I was laid off, I mentioned this to my manager and she said "Oh, no we make that decision". It was a harsh thing to say and even harder to hear. So glad to be out of that company - looking back, it was the best thing that could've happened to me. My only regret is that I didn't leave there sooner, on my own terms.

Your manager has some input, if one person from their team has to go. Of course the loyal pets who sell themselves in anyway necessary always survive. You know who they are.
