Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Laid off this week

I was laid off along with several other senior people in my group this week. I saw this coming from a mile away:

First with the announcement of an "exciting" new team of 150 volunteers who will save the company money by working 12 hour days to replace as many full time employees as possible and backfill the rest with contractors in India. The announcement email was worded like a startup prospectus, trying to make this sound exciting but really saying "if you're in the US and want to keep your job, volunteer for 12 hour days or we can't guarantee what will happen."

Then in December I received a BE review, despite leading the team on a successful Greenfield conversion and receiving "thank you" commendations from others on my team during the project. No details were given about why I received below expectations on my review and my manager said he wanted to at least give me a meets expectations but his boss wouldn't let him. I knew my end was near right then and there.

Thanks to others on this site for sharing your experiences and letting us all know what's going on behind the scenes.

Our offshore resources handled production support. They took a call, created a ticket.... opened a ticket to us to really solve the issue and closed theirs based on reassignment to onshore. Within months our management were lecturing and cutting us because 100% of off shore tickets were closed within minutes to an hour while those reassigned to us could take hours or days. They acted as if they could not comprehend the difference between closing a ticket and fixing a problem, but hindsight they understood but did not want to rock the boat and get displaced. Now we’re mostly all long gone and there are many layers of ticket managers.... none resolving anything.

We are just too stupid to understand how this saves money...

“ I do not know of any other company with this diabolical policy”

Netflix does this but they are a cooler company and more culturally relevant.

Many years ago when Indian trend has started I was wondering why only certain companies got projects with BNYM and why sometimes you have unnecessary number of offshore resources assigned to it. It is not a rocket science to understand why.

Been rated BE for 2 years now and skipped on raises. Just when I think it's my turn to get cut, they give me more work instead.

Indians would never do a 12 hour job unless they are being paid Overtime or brainwashed that they will be promoted . BNY Mellon management is so good at manipulating someone to get the job done that they end up spoiling their career .

Some of the top level "Indian Managers" have accepted the jobs in India as some of these managers have their kids in US colleges and would like to travel on "business" in company money to stay and visit them. This is so "low" as it can get - when travel is restricted between office locations in US - I am surprised to see these people in NY every month or so. The money used for their travel is such a waste, these managers know nothing or do nothing and not even close to business, some have not even worked in Finance domain for crying out loud. Labor department should be notified and a case opened as BNY - what started as a trickle is now all over the place. US citizens are displaced and we find more and more Indian employees transferred as managers here. I know couple of them, nothing against them, everyone is trying to do what is best for their families, but where would a US citizen go for a job if all jobs are given to Indian employees within BNY.

Companies first at all - people who work, manage, own this companies. Logical assumption people on the top should be interested to have loyal, qualify workers with extensive experience. However what I see so far a lot of such people was separated only because they are US workers. And not only such people view them self highly, It confirmed by others their managers/coworkers. Some is shocked when hear the name of some people who was separated. However low management can not do anything about it especially in case when they have Indian manager them self. The only thing they can say "Sorry I would never do this. You are very good worker but if I am not agree with my Indian manager I be next". May be it normal for "every place" but I personally doubt.

Companies hire, promote and let go however they want. If we don’t like their policies, we are free to work for other companies. There is never a guarantee that a company will view us as highly as we view ourselves, and we will always resent the favored employees if we are not among them.

This is true every place that I have worked, at mostly fintech companies.

What is different at BNY Mellon is their quota for Below Expectations. I do not know of any other company with this diabolical policy. The only reason I can imagine is they must want to create discontent among managers that must implement policy, and their targets.

BNY Mellon would probably be happy if we all just quit. And maybe that would make us happy, too.

Hopefully being laid off with a package is a good alternative to just quitting. Enjoy some time off with pay, then go get your next, best job ever. Good luck!
