Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Bonus scandal at BNY Mellon

Lots of talk on here regarding midyear and end of the year reviews and all the BE’s people have been unfairly getting. People being walked out the door in an effort to save money on headcount. While all of this might be true, there’s another side to the story that people don’t talk about. The performance reviews are being manipulated to take actual performance out of the equations so that managers can arbitrarily pick and choose who gets a bonus and who doesn’t. It’s all based on a buddy buddy system. A manager will give out a bogus BE to a hard working employee simply because that hard working employee is making someone else with a different work ethic look bad. So the solution is to give the hard working employee a BE in order to protect the bonus of the other employee who is less deserving but is buddy buddy with management. That’s how it all works.

There are people at BNY Mellon with grade G, H, or I who are making $5,000, $10,000, or even $20,000 annual bonus and they sit on on their rear and hardly do anything. But they manage the manager above them to the point where they and their bonus is well protected. So the real low hanging fruit winds up being the person who actually works hard and deserves a bonus, but instead gets a BE and eventually sub payments if they are lucky.

This isn't true. Only employees at the J level and higher get bonuses. At job grades below that, you can get an outperformance award of up to around $2500. Bonuses for employees at the VP level are usually between 10% and 20%, but once you hit the director level they can be half your pay or more. Every bank in the industry gives bonuses, and they couldn't keep any employees at those levels if they stopped. That being said, bonuses are being reduced due to poor company performance last year.

Could see an I making $5,000 after a spectacular year but $10,000 to $20,000 annual bonus for an I?

I call B.S... it never happened.

Grade G, H, or I who are making $5,000, $10,000, or even $20,000 annual bonus??? Really?

I am level L, work hard for my “achieves”, and usually get a $3,000 bonus. I actually thought that was OK until hearing that others got so much more.

Can anyone confirm those big bonuses?

I’m sorry but the company is obviously not doing well (missed earnings 2x and there will be more), layoffs are happening, etc. Why should the company be giving out bonuses? And if anyone was let go they definitely should not be receiving a bonus. So what departments are getting bonuses? I know it’s not the Custody department.

Exactly... Thank you for the last comment here. MGMT will not be transparent on anything. And they cannot wait to lay us all off

Please stop posting incorrect information that is opinion but posed as a fact because you know someone in Brooklyn. There is some misinformation to be sure, but it is not the majority and all levels of employees have concerns and can and do post. The situation is toxic. We should be helping each here because the management at BNYM won't don't anything resembling the right thing for the business or it's people.

every place works like this. the person who is in charge of the cost center decides on the ultimate bonus for every employee, with or without their manager's input or okay. Most promotions to a VP or higher are done by a committee, the only thing your manager may do is recommend.

jeez people the way you talk you think it is not done like this at other financial places. it is and has been for decades, so stop complaining.

you either put up with it or leave the industry or join a union.

Agree with that comment but middle management are afraid of their shadows. Spineless is too good a word for them

Ok, so it appears a few legal cases habe been taken and settled on the quiet. What they are doing is illegal but if people do not go down the grievance and legal system it will continue. So use your savy and do not have any fear.

Bonus data is one of bny's closest guarded secrets. You wont get anyone to admit to anything.

Most of the people who are posting on here don’t get bonuses. They get raises of 1-1.5%. I know from several sources who used to work in Brooklyn office.
