They would still probably need atleast one person to do data to support local items. Same can probably be said about local signage but current model is redundant way too many people in the regional/global offices.

A global marketing team is needed, but why should each region need a team? Send a monthly package to the store and require proof that it has been hung. Same with data teams...regional teams are not needed.

Who do you think makes all that “standard” signage, genius? And if you don’t think we still do donations and community giving, you’re not paying attention.

Wait, they were actually able to find marketing people to lay off? haha

Not surprising - not sure what marketing is needed since all the signage is standard everywhere and we no longer do any events or any obvious community giving or donations. Maybe we will have fewer cringey commercials!

2 weeks to find a new job or get severance. Global teams affected, Merch, Finance, Tech, Marketing. No clue how many total, but enough I know personally to count on 2 hands and some were great workers.

SSI was cut down to part time SSS then they decided SSS was going back to full time a few years later. WF likes to cut positions to get rid of people making more money then reinstate positions once they replace them with a lower wage worker. Team combinations eliminated TL roles in some departments then they uncombo them and higher new TL at a lower wage. The same will go for whoever they are cutting now.

There are so many redundant tasks happening I'm surprised there aren't more store level layoffs. SSS scan audits aisle for missing tags and price discrepancies, leadership does out of stock scans, prime shoppers do out of stock scans. Meanwhile other retails have a roomba style robot that scans the whole damn store in an hour.

So they are just going to automate systems that already should have been from the sound if it.

The layoffs are inevitable. It’s just a matter of when and in what order.
Mackey said, according to Bloomberg. “They’re making investments in technology for Whole Foods that I think will be transformative. And they’ve been respectful of our culture; they haven’t tried to just turn us into Amazon. So, the best way to answer that question is, ‘John, if you could do it all over again, would you make the same decision?’ And the answer is yes. It was the right decision for us."

With the tech investment, in anyway it should mean, also the culture difference with Amazon could result in letting go of many longtime employees who have been drawing a relatively bigger paychecks for the job not quite different from new hires. There is no way Amazon is okay with paying anyone when the pay doesn’t justify in amazon’s own culture/terms.

They don't need to worry WF will keep them Whole just making way less money doing a different job. That makes it OK though right?

Many people on tech and other merchandising/marketing teams laid off. Not given 4 months severance, given four months to find a job and ONE month severance in Feb. 2021.

When have those who determined our fate ever given a sh– about morale?

i work for one of the tech teams and yeah they didn't tell us anything either. Talked to a contact in the TMS group and they didn't know much either except "your team isn't affected by this". Heard from another colleague that they let 6 people go on their team but they have until February and will get 4 months severance.

When there's cuts at WFM it's usually more than one round. Waiting to see what other shoes drop. In the meantime morale will likely go down for anyone indirectly impacted. Hope those decision makers realize that.

layoffs are definitely happening, especially in Tech ! However probably also in other departments... the reality is that Whole Foods has done well this year (thanks to restaurants low traffic) but not as well as it could have and there are consequences to that... :(

Whatever it is will make the employees life worse. No call is ever good news its either layoffs or telling people that the position they have will cease to exist and they can take another for less money.

I think it's higher up tech team. We had a very vague call about how there will be changes that will not directly impact us on the call (STSS group, mostly), but that we'll probably hear about them. Of course, they didn't tell us the damn changes. So...could be some folks in Austin being let go.
