Contract to hire situation- Am I screwed?

Was brought in on a to-hire contract this past June. Our dept spans 2 locations (Pittsburgh, Boston). 7 people have been fired/left/“left” in the past 7 months. I was told that if a full time spot opens I’d be offered but now feeling a little nervous. Am I done for?

I would highly suggest not working here. It’s the most demoralizing place I’ve ever worked. I was miserable here

Some departments are actually hiring during the cuts. Makes you wonder why the left hand can't talk to the right and not screw over someone; but decide if you really want to roll the dice. Probably depends on how hungry you are, and if you can wait; other financial services industries are also laying people off.. kinda s—s during covid for an employee with little to no years to accrue severance and so medical benefits.

New spots will open. Keep your head down do the work no one wants to do. Do it like you love it even if you hate it. You do that and you control your destiny. All other other things out of your control are just that.

I worked as a contractor for just over a year before being hired as a full-time employee. As long as there are open reqs in your department and HR is letting managers fill them, then you have a good chance of being hired.
We were supposed to get two new people, but just as they got to the final interviews, we were told that all new hires had to be justified to the CIO, and apparently she thought we could do without them.
Basically, it's a c-apshoot. Good luck!

You cant trust anything bny mellon says regarding being hired on permanently. I knew contractors who worked at bny mellon for over 2 years before being hired on directly. BNY Mellon uses last years MER to pay for this years operating expenses. As a contractor you have no rights because you technically don't work there.
