Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

Why?

  • won’t Cathy Bessant understand that holding onto this antiquated idea of co-location is outdated and unnecessarily expensive for the company? How much money would we save if we seriously looked at location leases where resources could work from home permanently? I am the only person on my team in Charlotte and before Covid would speak to no one in my office building. Yet I’m still expected to pay $130 for parking each month to fight traffic, walk 2 blocks to get to my office and then not speak nor see anyone unless it is on a webex. My teams productivity increased 50% during covid from being home. She mentions boundaries being an issue during quarantine. Let the managers and their teams manage that. One thing for sure: if I have to spend 2 hours in my car each day commuting to work the chance you will see me at my desk after before 9AM and after 5PM each day will be 0. Also gone will be me logging in from home after work or on weekends. We’ve learned something too...that life is too short to be working hours and hours each day and not being with our families.

I just had me year end evaluation. My production has more than doubled since working from home. This was the case for the entire team. The ONLY reason I need to go back into the office is so that my snacks in the kitchen are further away from me all day.

A few years ago they were on this we are basically needing to become a software company that does banking, considering how tech is still seen as an expense and not an investment by most departments here, no way that happens or we become one for be worst software companies

The brilliant geniuses who make all the money are on the business side, whereas technology is merely a cost, a drag, that should be minimized, offshored, outsourced, eliminated altogether as far as possible. This, while the bank is in essence a collection of computer systems with human minders.

Bessant is the single most overrated leader in the US. She is extremely adept at playing politics, but the reality is that she is ruthless, uncaring and absolutely oblivious to the needs/wants of the employees. Her bias against a work from home concept is ridiculous and self-serving. I have no clue how someone as reasonable and solid as Moynihan puts up with her nonsense.

Maybe because she’s a poor manager? Why BAC hires so many non tech people to run tech is the problem. Face it, this company doesn’t care about any of us.

It already kind of can’t compete, I’ve known several people on the tech side that leave for jobs making much more money in other places that offer modern comforts

They don't care about how much work you do or how productive you are because they do not directly see it at the employee level. Productivity measurement is what has been filtered through half-a-dozen layers of management, metrics, and surveys. They see when they go into the office employees "at their best" when they are in their presence which skews the reality. They want this workplace framework even with the greater hit to the bottom line. They don't care how expensive it is for employees to commute or park their car.. to them it is what you are supposed to be paying for. If remote work becomes the true norm, the bank will never be able to compete for top talent.

The bank should consider each position. I was hired as a work-from-employee, but now required to work in an office. None of my coworkers are there and the way I communicate with them is the same. The open concept workspace negatively impacts my productivity. Commuting (8 hours each week) is a waste of time, stressful, and contributes to global warming. I have no incentive to work after hours or on weekends anymore - that time in now spent in an automobile.

It boils down to trust. Many employees at the bank have been lazy and just try to skate by, so they can’t be flexible with the rest of us. The real problem is they need to performance manage staff so that they can offer better flexibility to everyone.
