Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Trying to get laid off, would this plan work?

My job is very important to my group, and I doubt I'll be laid off. I'm in the 50-70k salary range. I'm the only 1 in our group that does my tasks, and the only one that even knows how to.

I WANT to be laid off. My entire job can be done in ~5 hours per week. The other 35 hours I watch movies.

If I tell my boss the truth about my light workload, do you think I'll be laid off?

Contact the CEO of your LOB or group function head of there's bloating you want to "report". Lots of pressure on them and they'll be appreative - you may even land a promo.

“They are also working to identify all such examples where employees are earning income durIng work hours if not pre-approved. In this case you get fired.”

In that case they should fire the entire In House Agency. EVERYONE is freelancing on the side.

I’d say lay low. Your boss knows your bandwidth. I’m a manager and all of 2020 my team was idle one or two things to do here and there. I knew they were idle but trust me a lot of people at wells are doing busy work and making 6 figure incomes. Find something else to do on the side to occupy yourself. Or if too bored find another job that pays more even within Wells.

Dude, are you really this clueless? Your only problem seems to be that you are bored with your job.

Bro, you got to get your act together. You could volunteer to take on extra work, or at the very least take advantage of available time to – I don't know - maybe take 1,2, or 200 training courses - to get some skills and learn something new.

Does anyone know who to contact within the bank to let them know of a team that is very overcompensated and does work that is highly duplicative of another less compensated team? I can’t go to the managers manager or any other manager above them for fear of ramification.

I would just lay low and keep collecting the cash until it stops;

how do I get a role like yours? I can focus on other things and make free money

You just described most jobs here WF....

The higher you go, the less work you do....

There's a project going on to identify all of these examples across the bank. They will find you and do one of four things:

  • offshore the work
  • aggregate like work together and add responsibility to ensure you have more than 50 hrs of work a week
  • lay you off
  • manage you out

They are also working to identify all such examples where employees are earning income durIng work hours if not pre-approved. In this case you get fired.

It's funny that you think nobody else can do your job. I'm a solid exceeds on review and I had a 4% increase, but it would take them about a week to replace me. We are all a ripple in a very big pond.

UGH- this makes me crazy to read this. Meanwhile I am working at least 10 hour days to just get the “basic” work done . I am exempt so no overtime for me.
Do yourself a favor and look for another job and put in an honest days work and feel good about that.

I really, really wouldn't try to get laid off while we are in a WFH environment if you have no plans to find another job. Do your 5 hours/week of work, keep quiet, maybe even become a poor performer but don't admit to the light load. Let them eventually pick you.

I know it restricts you by being tied to your home office but surely you can find productive ways to use that time to plan for your retirement. Do a hobby or something. At risk of downvotes... get a mouse mover app so you don't have to keep logging in after stepping away.

I'm incredibly jealous of the fact that you only work 5 hours a week and get paid for 40 hours of work. It must be nice.

No, your plan will not work. Simply because your boss will never, ever admit to being such a poor manager that his direct reports sit on their hands 95% of the time, with him being unaware of that fact.

If you tell him he won’t thank you, and he won’t do you any favors.

You might get more work, and you will definitely get on your boss’s bad side, but you won’t get a package

Just quit, then tell him to hire me.

If I was nearing retirement, getting paid a full time wage for so little work I’d honestly keep my mouth shut. Speak up and you’ll probably get more work.

If you really want out, and have a good relationship w your boss, maybe subtly let them know you are starting to think about retirement. Do not mention your light workload!

No doubt your boss is aware of your proximity to retirement. But if he/she is really kind maybe they are trying to do you a favor by keeping you on until then.

Or maybe he/she won’t lay you off since you’re kind of a short timer anyway.

Either way, laying you off close to retirement may be a no-no for risk/HR, no matter how nicely you ask.

Dude. Say nothing.... you are laid off and you’re getting paid for it. Use that downtime to shop for real estate. Make tic tok videos and make review videos for YouTube. Get your Mba... learn another language. But say nothing!!!

Sorry but you are an id–t. If it is true that your only doing “~5 hours per week, “ and making as much as you say you are, Why quit when the job market is so poor currently? - Short sighted numbskull.

I guess it depends how much you trust your manager, and if they are even involved in those discussions/decisions.

I wish we had buyouts.

I would't do it, they might just fire you (they will find the way ) and you will not get the package. Why not do what you do until you decide you've had enough...

I would say yes it would work, they’re looking for cost efficiencies and saving your yearly salary/bonus with work that only takes 20% of someone’s time is a easy win for them. Doesn’t hurt to bring it up- it’s not like they’re going to promote you based on that.. worst case is they give you some extra work.

Seriously doubt it bro. How do you know your manager won't use it against you? Moreover if you're near retirement you'd be a costly layoff target they'd likely prefer to lay off someone cheaper.

OP here. I want to be laid off because I'm near retirement age. I won't be going to another employer. Would my plan work to tell boss my actual workload?

Use your free time to get paid improving your value to a future employer. Go get some certifications or a masters degree or something and have them pay you while you study.
