Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Do you know anybody who has quit recently?

Do you know what the procedure was for them? Did they have to give their two weeks notice? Is that even necessary? I'm planning on quitting but I haven't found a new job yet. Once I do, I need to know when I can tell them I can start. I'd like to be out of this place ASAP, but I don't want to burn my bridges either.

Can confirm 1aFR5uA3 is correct.

We had someone quit in our BU (asset management). She had been here a long time and was loved by all. Now being treated as a canary in the coal mine that something is wrong. Hello, you are just now figuring out that something is wrong? Everyone that can find a job is jumping....

@3qqi+1aFR5uA3, you're obviously totally clueless about reality. I know DOZENS of people who were let go. Every single one of them were done working as soon as they were notified and their last day of employment was more than 2 weeks later. They also received SUB payments beyond that. There are MANY things wrong with this company even beyond their downsizing process, but giving notice IS NOT one of them.

To poster 2htd+1aFR5uA3....you obviously don't know a lot of people.

If you are bonus eligible, if you don't give notice at certain levels, they can recoup it. I am not clear how that would work unless they subtract it out of of your final checks, or somehow legally could go after it, but those are the requirements. If you don't get a bonus or if it's small, then maybe it doesn't matter, but the person above was still correct about not burning bridges; you never know where you will cross paths with your manager and coworkers again.

I don't know ANYONE who was fired from BK without notice. Although, many are not required to report to work between when they were notified of their termination and their actual termination date.

My life in BNY has mutated into work and after work sleeping, then work the next day. Repeat Rinse Repeat. I have lost interest on all my hobbies. Maybe I should look for a new job somewhere too.

Depends on your situation. Most people need to give at least two weeks. BNY Mellon has required notice periods specific to your level but, shockingly, the Executive Committee is rarely held to them!

The reality is that it doesn’t serve anyone well to keep anyone around so if you make clear to your manager that you’re prepared to do what’s needed to facilitate a smooth transition, a decent manager will work with you.

@1tns+1aFR5uA3 You outlined the double standard perfectly. If one of us, an employee, fail to live up to BNYM's lofty standards or are otherwise found sub-par for whatever reason...the hammer falls on us immediately and we get ushered out of the office and building by security escort. However, our goodbye to the company when we decide to move on is supposed to drag on for two weeks to give them time to seemlessly find a lackey to take over our spot turning the grindstone wheel so that productivity isn't affected. Well you know what? Sc--w that. If I am fortunate enough to find a worthwhile position at another company that matches or comes close to my pay and benefits at BNYM (and I'll be happy to accept a bit less, too), I'll be saying Sayonara the very next day (after having removed any essentials from my desk the day before). I'll be more than happy to burn this particular bridge behind me because I'm never coming back to this blood-sucking soul-crushing circus again. Even without any pay I've earned the two weeks off for the rejuvenation of my own well-being to purge the poison out of my system.

Imagine the long and torturous drag of a 3 month notice period which I was held to, despite apparently being BE when I finally stuck two fingers up and escaped the he-l ho-e for a new and better opportunity. Man that was the longest 3 months of my life. But worth it in the end to be somewhere I'm valued. Good luck finding a new position, hopefully you'll be outta there soon.

Give 2 weeks notice, not that it makes much of a difference to BNY. If your new employer has a problem with it, you probably don't want to work for them anyway.
And even if BK fires you without notice, they still pay you.

Yes, definitely give 2 weeks notice so not to burn bridges -- now, and in the future. In today's environment of people changing jobs, and M&A, someday the BNYM manager you can't wait to get away from today joins your new company and becomes your new manager.

Giving 2 weeks notice is a courtesy. If you don't want to burn bridges then give 2 weeks. What's interesting is when a company let's you go they don't give you notice. They tap you on your shoulder ask you to come with them to HR. You are then escorted out of the building. Any personal belongings you had will remain at your desk until someone gives a cr-p about sending them to you, which can take months. Why are the employees required to be respectful in our departure, but the employee isn't? Respect and professionalism should work both ways.

I quit my job with BNY last March, giving them 2 weeks notice. A colleague of mine quit the same month without any notice because her current employer requested her to start ASAP.

You give two week notice. You'll tell your new employer you can start after your two weeks have elapsed. Even if you hated your current employer you still give the two weeks because it looks good to your new employer. Imagine hiring someone who left their old employer without a 2 week notice.
