Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Playing with people's lives

What's the point of hiring somebody just to lay them off less than six months later? Our team desperately needed help after many layoffs decimated us and we (shockingly) got it in October. The guy was young and had little experience but he was willing to learn and he was a hard worker. He turned out to be a great addition to the team until last week when he was told his position was eliminated. Why? Why give somebody a job and pretend it's a permanent thing just to do something like that to them a few months later? Do they enjoy playing with people's lives? Not to mention, now we are back at the point where we need help but it doesn't seem like we'll be getting any.

Hello Original Poster, do you mind sharing the location and department this occurred at? I am asking because I was offered a job here and want to ensure this same situation does not happen to me.

Anyone who gets email from this company, politely agree and say you are interested for the role, fill the application form, put your salary range above 200k a year. One way to tell them that you belong somewhere.

For every old person they displace, they need to throw in a young person, so it doesn't look like age discrimination on the layoffs.

It's poor leadership that is ever so common at the bank. This incompetence is just the tip of the iceberg that is sinking the company.

Agree. Same thing happened to me at another firm. I was told help was very much needed and they had several positions to fill. I was hired and then a year later, laid off. Why do this to people? Why waste someone's time? I could have went elsewhere rather than be yanked around like that. I hope I find something soon.
