Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Salary Grades

Does anyone have any idea how they actually work?

I'm an 'I' and my base is $100K (rounded to the nearest 10)

How about you?

These are ALL OVER the place. It's almost as if the grades themselves are completely meaningless.

J, 74k, Pgh...wtf!

If you start in the company at a certain grade, you are MUCH better off than someone who's worked their way up. I know similar people who were hired as J and started off at 80k.

I left in 2017 and worked in NYC. I was a J and my salary was 107k with 3.5k in bonus.

If you don't like the salary grade you are in, politely, respectfully complain to your manager, and maybe even make it a performance goal on your appraisal. of course, those are negotiated, but your comments are all yours.

Managers above the managers have some, limited ability to make small adjustments, but they have to be approved by senior leaders. If you are contemplating leaving, that might do it, but if they are in cutback mode, then you could also get cut, so choose your options carefully. If they are cutting staff, then you don't want to cut yourself. BUT, I have seen some people get bumps.

A lot of people have over inflated opinions of themselves, but if you truly ARE that special, and can convince your manager whom hopefully already appreciates that and agrees, then if there is budget money, their bosses boss can do something.

Can't get water from a stone though.. if there is no money, then there is none to give, and raises this year were sucko anyway, for EVERYONE (Grades M and above got nothing, zippo, zip, but they also make more and can absorb it. For the rest of us (J, K, and L were 50 percent unless your manager shared the pain, and if they did, fair enough, but also sucked. Below J should have been okay, the little that it was.

@jvr+1bBlV5P7 That's amazing! Thank you so much!

Now if we only have access to something like that for San Francisco, New York, or Boston...

An added layer of complexity is that each job grade/range is also tied to a location factor. For example, NYC is considered "Geo Range" 5, which means that employees in NYC get a 20% bump in their ranges as compared to, say Pittsburgh and Oriskany which are Geo Range 1. So, a K in Pittsburgh might have a range of 65K-100K whereas a K in NYC would have a range of $78K-120K.

I'm applying for a few internal jobs, intentionally 2 or 3 grades above mine hoping that it would mean a decent raise, but most of these answers are not inspiring me much confidence...

If there are enough answers, I'll put together a chart and make it available to everyone.

I started at $75k 18 years ago and ended up at $100k as a full stack developer, VP and grade K. My position was "eliminated" and I was just offered a new job at $124k but I'm waiting to hear back about another one before accepting that.

@ruz+1bBlV5P7, I've been with the company for 15 years. Started at $40K, now $100K. I guess I've been lucky.

There is about a 20k spread in each grade and they overlap... for example... you can be a grade F and make between 40k-60k, grade G can make between 45k-65k, grade H can be between 50k-70k etc... too big of a spread if you ask me.

Im guessing the OP is a new hire from outside the bank which always equates to a higher salary than internal employees moving up job grades in the company.

Been here 20 years, Job grade K, $80,000

I was a HH associate level for about 13 years until I started questioning my salary which was in the 40’s for about 12 years. They adjusted it July 2020 and still can't make ends meet. I'm over it, I know my worth

I don't believe job grade salaries compare across business units or divisions. I'm J grade in transfer agency Global Ops and Tech and my $ equivalent is 65k. I know staff who moved from TA to a non Global Ops division, stayed on same grade but saw 20% salary rise.
