Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

‘promotion’

I recently was put on a leadership team, given direct reports, involved in high-level strategy development, etc. To be honest, I didn’t want any of it, but I figured it could mean a different title and more money. When I asked those questions it was crickets. Anyone else in a similar position or had a similar experience? It’s hard being fairly certain all of the people on my team must make MUCH more money than I do.

They will use you to do as much as you can for less money. I was doing the work of a supervisor and section manager for Atleast 6 months before I finally got promoted. It’s nothing but a headache and they expect you to constantly work extra hours and weekends cause that’s why you “make the big bucks”. You get nothing extra and no recognition either. And let’s not talk about all the other bs that’s expected and cr-p shifted to you because other mgrs are lazy as he-l and think they’re above doing their own teams work

I was made a "manager" of a new team, interim to begin with. (Yes, I have direct reports, all of whom made more than me.) At first I was happy because I had aspired to move up and thought I would be a good leader (I am). My direct manager put in for my official promotion, but kept being denied it each cycle because he was not in the "in" clique, and I was ki----g myself making sure I proved that I deserved it. Fast forward more than a YEAR later. My wonderful manager was replaced by a "friend of Bridget's" and all of a sudden I finally get the actual job title and at least a raise to have me not be the lowest paid on the team. I know it was not out of the goodness of anyone's heart. They were probably tipped off that I was a lawsuit waiting to happen (gender and age).

Yes. You are not alone. Only way to make money at this company is as an external hire. Otherwise they just keep giving you more work with a bigger title but very little to no pay increase.

Know a bunch of people that got moved up a job grade level with no pay increase when they "realigned" the job titles to "more align with other companies "

Common pattern. Figure out why you are suddenly so useful for the next two years or so. Get another offer and ask for a counter.

Not the place to take a promotion! Someone on my team was promoted to a position where no overtime was paid. They didn't back fill. She is probably working close to 20 hours a week for free doing most of her old her old job and the new one. The head of the division said people know what they are getting into when they accept a promotion. Horrible, immoral attitude. Thankfully I'm out of there soon.

Unless you see it in writing, it’s not a promotion. Its just you doing more work without being compensated for it. It will be you watching others officially get promoted while your superiors keep whispering in your ear, your next, your next. All the while, they are getting paid the big bucks.

Same thing happened to me. I took over the role of a director (as a low level VP), got the title but no money initially due to...pandemic. Year end rolls around, one notch promotion and 6.2547984% pay increase (which would kick in around July?). I quit, moved to another bank and love it.

If you have direct reports, you should be able to see their salaries. If you cannot, you are not in the leadership role that you think. But to answer your question, yes. While I was there as manager of a team, they laid off another manager and gave me that team too, with no change in title or any salary increase. (Or any real power, either.) Maybe they thought I’d be happy to still have a job. That lasted until I realized that nothing would change, then I quit. Now someone else has that role and is indeed happy to still have a job. And I am happy not working there anymore. Good luck.
