Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Basic technology at this company is insanely bad!!

It's simply unbelievable how bad the computing technology is at this company. The seemingly most simple things at BNYM are so hard, and they keep making it harder every day.

Take remote VPN for example. The company uses pulse secure. This is the most unreliable utility at the whole bank. It NEVER works right! Heaven forbid you are at a hotel or a public wifi that has a webpage authentication before you can connect. This is the kiss of death for BNYM users. BNYM has pulse secure set to have the laptops so locked down, that you cant even access a webpage before the vpn has been fully logged into. Its a real mess.

Then there are tech issues like installing applications like MS Office. Nothing can be installed normally. EVERYTHING is a workaround. Imagine needing to use powershell scripts to install apps as a workaround because the normal installation procedures just dont work. Thats BNYM. Wanna install office? Good luck. BNYM severs just cant handle that. That's an HOURS long process!! There are depts running applications that are over 20 years old! How's that for cutting edge technology!!!

The technology here is an absolute nightmare. Don't expect ANYTHING to work right.

How about the Byzantine tangle of HR systems links? Performance reviews, Healthcare comparisons HSAs and FSAs… all entangled with all others like spaghetti.

On a positive note, I've been doing quite well using the installed version of Minecraft. I've even built a virtual banking universe in which all is well, all employees are happy and singing and dancing!

Is Jabber even supposed to be used on vds? When we were initially converted to VDS and told to work from home 2 days a week they never gave us a phone solution.

How about Cisco Jabber? I decided over a year ago to stop fixing Jabber every day after logging in. If there was any serious reason using it they would fix the issues. The fact that it is ignored tells me all that I need to know.

On a positive note, when we go back to the office, there are good bagels in the cafeteria.

The bigger questions are:

  1. Why do we still install office.
  2. Why do employees need office.

The “preventing someone from accessing a webpage before VPN is logged into” is a cyber security best practice, and something you will find at most any other big bank (although the hotel thing is annoying). Get used to that. On installing office, why is PowerShell bad? I’m confused. It’s just a language to facilitate IT tasks (such as installing software….). Plenty of other legitimate issues with BNYM tech, but these ones don’t make too much sense to me.
