The staff of HR (and other back office functions) help the bank meet its diversity quotas. For gender, racial, se-ual orientation diversity.

To assist with layoff selections that will not end up in court? The H/R lead is an attorney. Does that sound like a qualification for an H/R lead? I would rather be lead by someone with an MBA/DBA in organizational leadership or business management. But whatever……it is what it is.

The HR team is the company's first line of defense from disgruntled employees. If you submit a complaint to HR, it is directed to the Employee Relations team. Someone from that team should schedule a call with you to discuss your complaint. They will then run the details by the firm's employment lawyers, so the lawyers can evaluate it for ethics/code of conduct violations and legal liability. More often than not, they will decide that your complaint has no teeth, and the ER team will provide you with a canned response to that effect. It is then up to you to pursue other avenues, e.g., get your own legal representation. I don't know of any examples of HR actually helping an employee as a result of a complaint. If anyone does, do tell.

only helpful when time comes to fire you. They then know to show the commitment to the cause

HR's job is to cover up employees' problems and protect the company

So you need the EC to care in order for HR to do their job?

Don’t blame the HR staff. A company’s HR dept reflects what the company wants of them.

At BNYM, there is no real talent strategy or credible path to creating the culture management loves to talk about.

So HR can’t do much about it. If you bring them complaints and they know that the EC doesn’t care, what can they do?

HRs primary job is to protect the company.

BNYM does not have a proper HUMAN RESOURCES group. If so, HR would be develop strategies to retain employees. Sadly, I agree with the previous comment, BNYM HR has never been helpful to individual employees, only to management.

@jru, the only time they've helped me is when I contacted them to see about my makeup contributions in my 401(k) because I maxed it out before the end of the year. Not sure why it takes almost 4 months for them to give me the contribution I'm owed.

I actually like that chatbots for resetting/unlocking passwords etc because i don't sit on the phone for 30 mins trying to figure out what they are asking me and still getting nowhere.

HR is there to ensure no one gets out of line and that management is fully serviced. It's now a largely outsourced function, so we'd be better off dealing with chatbots than with an HR rep. In my relatively long tenure at BNYM, and Mellon before that, I can't think of one time that HR was helpful to individual employees - only to management. Sorry you are getting ignored, but that's just the way they are.
