Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Don't expect help from HR

The HR team is the company's first line of defense from disgruntled employees. If you submit a complaint to HR, it is directed to the Employee Relations team. Someone from that team should schedule a call with you to discuss your complaint. They will then run the details by the firm's employment lawyers, so the lawyers can evaluate it for ethics/code of conduct violations and legal liability. More often than not, they will decide that your complaint has no teeth, and the ER team will provide you with a canned response to that effect. It is then up to you to pursue other avenues, e.g., get your own legal representation. I don't know of any examples of HR actually helping an employee as a result of a complaint. If anyone does, do tell.

Everything in HR has been 180 degrees the opposite of what is taught in B School HR courses for at least 2 decades. Over the last four years they upped the ante and began to try drive people out as it’s cheaper than severance. Predictably everyone is disgruntled and many are leaving.

HR is in place to protect the Firm and prevent a lawsuit. They are not there to help employees. They are not your friend and not there to help you. The HR dept has historically been the weakest, non-contributing, and poorest performing function in the Firm. It will not change so the work experience you have will not change.

HR staffs get paid from the company; their jobs are to keep their paychecks coming every week to pay for their own bills/rent
