Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

It's not what you know, but whom you know

Others may disagree, but my overall impression of BNY Mellon is that it’s all about whom you know here. Connections are more important than skills. Competency is simply not valued enough and it seems to be becoming less and less important.

I don't think building connections and networking is a bad thing, but it becomes demoralizing when knowing a 'specific respected person' is incomparably more important than having knowledge and skills.

I dunno, I know a lot of people and it doesn't seem to do any good. I think it would help if THEY knew ME.
But seriously, my bosses boss who was in charge of a few dozen people had no idea what I did before he "eliminated" my position.

Agree. 2 Hanson full of Brooklyn/Staten Island Goombas with no real credentials. Let's see how long they last in Manhattan - if they even know how to get there.

Nowhere is this more evidenced than when posting for internal job moves. For career track employees, if you don’t know that you have it from the hiring manager before the post, there is no point in applying for it. HR actively prevents this. Your resume is typically weeded out for a variety of reasons prior to being presented to the hiring manager

Managing up is the most valued skill at BNYM and many other firms. Competency and knowledge of the business, products, and clients are not relevant, as evidenced by most of the senior leadership. Those who are good at managing up are rewarded in kind.

I have worked in a few different countries. Basically, this is true in every country. Royals want to keep their Royal blood within the family

Very True. Remember, BNY is not an investment company, not a customer focused entity, but merely tries to be a marketing company jumping onto the latest hit fad.
The implication is that employees have no core beliefs and just jump to the people that are into the latest hot dot.

No question. In my experience, if your group merges with another under one manager and your legacy manager is let go, you are the "red-headed step child." No offense to red-heads, just and expression.
