Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

I'm done with big banks

I used to think working at a big bank meant having job security. I used to think that sacrificing some things for job security (like the much better culture and work environment) was worth it. I was wrong on both counts. I'm now looking for a way out and I haven't applied to any of the usual suspects. I'm focusing my attention on smaller banks and I don't even mind moving if the right opportunity presents itself. I'm just so done with places like this.

Who cares if small banks lay off? At least it’s likely justified as opposed to the big banks which have absolutely no way whatsoever to rate, let alone rank, you, and you are more likely to be unrewarded, unable to move career-wise and completely captive to your non-essential skin, se-ual, ethnic, religious, age, political persuasion and other non-essential characteristics.

Still better than what we got from Charlie which was mostly Vaseline.

You do get a lot more experience and recognition by working at a small bank. Not only are your ideas recognized and rewarded, the benefits are better and you can learn a ton of new things.

Good for you. What next? A ‘small’ bank?

Smaller banks layoff constantly. Don't believe that they don't. I worked for one, and it seemed like every week someone was being laid off. It was tough there. I enjoyed it better than the larger banks, but was never at ease seeing so many layoffs. Eventually, I became one of them.

Agreed. The culture at a smaller bank could be better. Employees want to service clients and succeed.

But don’t think politics and toxic culture are not there, because it is there too.

Good luck, I hope you find a fantastic job in a great company.
