Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

New to BNY and now I'm scared of layoffs

I just got hired at BNY the beginning of the year. I have a couple of friends who work there who are really unhappy, but I needed a job and took the first one that would hire me.

I was worried when it took HR over 2 months to send me an official offer after the hiring manager told me I got the job (even though the manager said I was filling an emergency requirement). I was even more worried when I found out on my first day the manager quit 2 weeks before I started.

Here I am after a couple of weeks and now I'm hearing rumors of people getting laid off. I figure since I'm the new person I'll be the first on the chopping block.

What have I gotten myself into?

Some of the guys who got laid off from here got job at Google. This is shame for the bank that they hire wrong managers who doesn’t recognized talent and keep all YES d-mb d-mb!

The well intended people who advise to "keep your head down" do not get it. This mentality is part of the over problem with the company. I have many relatively senior colleagues who have selfishly uttered similar sayings. These are 55+ year olds who have managed to climb the corporate ladder into director and above positions with one motivation - to squeeze out another 5 years from this place. They are "yes" men and women who would rather do entry level work then to question why such work is still being done in costly locations. They work all hours of the night and refuse vacation solely in fear of there future. Sad.

I think you mean an expense on the income statement unless of course our new friend is eligible for deferred compensation which indeed does appear on the balance sheet.

As long as you don't have any performance issues within the "Probation Peiod" then you as a new hire should bot be too worried about being laid off

However, now once you work your way up (as a result of hard work) and get promotions/raises, they will figure out a way to let you go because you are no more than a high expense on the balance sheet.

2 level managers have no ethics, they spread your information like Omicron Virus. Everyone knows who is being laid off a week before. If you have a strong personality and can cope with these gossips, you should be fine and soon you wanna leave these managers.

@1ehb, the problem is, you don't get noticed for getting things done and getting them done right. You get noticed by kissing bu-t.
And raises aren't supposed to be just for promotions.

I have been here 15 years and went up 8 letter grades.
Wouldn't say raise are non existence.
If you want a promotion you just have to find ways to get yourself notice.
The last thing I do is kissing a-s.

it took two months prob because of TSG. they are slow af with approvals and prob tried blocking your offer. the recruiters are also slow too.

at this point you wont get fired anytime soon because BNY is desperate to keep butts in seat.

Isn't the worst that could happen is you end up without a job again?

Welcome to the sh-t, kid. Keep your head down, do what I say and you'll make it out alive.

Ya hear that whistling sound overhead? Those are outgoing, raises and bonuses. They only go to the 52nd floor and higher so you don't have to worry about those.

The ones that go "whump whump whump", well that's a different story. That's the layoff artillery. Best you can do is hit the deck and hope it don't hit ya. If your number's up, it's up. If you see a buddy get hit, don't try to help 'im because they like to fire a second layoff at the same spot right after the first one.

When you hear that "whump whump whump", start digging. Dig deep, deep into your manager's backside where it's safer. If your manager gets hit, well, only thing you can do is pretend like it didn't happen and hide as best you can.

Don't eat anything from the cafeteria. Don't use the free coffee machines. DON'T touch anything in the restrooms. It's guaranteed case of the jungle guts.

And whatever you do, don't stand in the breakroom kitchen for more than a few minutes. The roaches will straight up eat you and steal your shoes afterward.

Good luck, kid.

The place is ok if you need a job. Keep your head low and your ears open for other opportunities. Though I think it’s highly unlikely they would lay you off

If you make it through the month and have not been fired you will be okay. Though I must say you have joined a sh-t company that does not value it's employees. Raises are non-existent if not embarrassing to put it mildly. If you do get a raise, you most likely will not see it till mid-year. Do yourself a favor and put your resume out there, supposedly there are tons of other companies hiring. Best of luck and stay under the radar for as long as you before you finally get out.
