Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

New job for 55+, how easy is to get it?

I would love to believe what someone here has said that people 55 and older can easily get picked up elsewhere. I'm not so sure about that. That's why I'm afraid of the layoffs that are being talked about more and more. Do most people really think it's easy to find a job at my age in this industry?

I’m 61 and I was let go last year. I now working for a very well known great company with a similar position with great benefits and pay. To start, I am making the almost same I made when I left Mellon after decades of service. That says a lot. Main thing is I am not petrified everyday that it might be the day that they lay me off. No worries anymore. Much happier.

No engaged person fails to realize that people use the term "interweb" to make fun of people who they're schooling on technology.

No engaged person uses the term “ interweb”. It comes from senior leaders who cannot use any technology.

@2ytk, you can tell you're 50+ when you think you need a degree, certification or classes to keep fresh. There's this thing called the interweb that has all the knowlege you need.
We haven't done boomer training since George Bush was president. Senior.

55+ are used to keeping their skills up, no problem there. There is an energy drop, but 55+ contract workers are highly valued because of a wealth of experience and great skill sets.

Reliability, knowledge, skills and decades of experience along with no risk due to the nature of contracting make for a win win. They also focus and don’t stare at their personal devices for half of the day.

What have you done to keep yourself fresh? Completed a graduate degree or certification in the last 5 years? Taking classes to learn something new? Active Board Member of a local non-profit? Mentoring junior employees? You have to constantly stay fresh and re-invent yourself. A 30 year veteran of Banking means nothing if the skillset is not fresh.

Untrue. Age discrimination is the only discrimination which is tacitly ignored. You’ll never see it prosecuted and the unwritten rule is to look the other way.

It will not be easy for a 55+ individual to find a new job at his/her existing pay grade. Age discriminaton to alive and well in this country. When was the last time you saw people marching in the streets to protest against what's going on? Also, the main-stream media won't beat the drum for us older folks because they have identified other groups they would rather help.

When you interview people do you consider their age? Because that's illegal if you do.
