Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

RTO has nothing to do with productivity

The only reason why we're going back is so that the real estate is not sitting there empty and (in their heads) losing them money (which it's not). It has nothing to do with productivity (which has proven to be better when we WFH) and it has nothing with better collaboration. They don't want their buildings sitting empty. That's it.

Of course the unused buildings are costing the bank a fortune. Can you really not understand that?

In agreement. Most people at BNYM are unproductive, they are in the office, they are at home.
Stop saying you were more productive and be honest that it was a better work/life balance.

RTO is happening because managers don’t do any work and are bored. In office, they can spend all day BSing with other useless managers, attend 2 hour meetings where a 5 minute conf call would suffice. Management is the cancer that ki---d BNY. Too many chiefs, not enough Indians (or is it too many Indians)

I’ve never seen a productive person intentionally slack. Consider that your nature could be more what is limiting your career. Regular raises have always been minuscule… never approaching cost of living. Salary growth and bonuses come from outstanding performance and risk taking. Mailing it in is a career ender and you’ll never be able to turn it back on again here or anywhere else.

@2mwp, I did that every year that I got a raise that was less than inflation. But it was only a matter of days before I was right back at it working 110%..

@rua+1: "I agree with the post. Most BNYM people are unproductive either at home or in the office. "

Correct. Speaking for myself, I am purposely unproductive but only by about 20-25%, which is how much my salary has not kept pace with COL and inflation over the last ten years or so.

Sure and each millennial on the call can only remember what he did on his smartphone during the call.

As long as mo-rons insist on stereotypes.

For a stretch at BNYM, my team reported into a exec whose odometer had turned over a couple times. He liked to conduct surprise after-hours inspections of the floors where his teams worked to see who was still there. And he was appalled that so few were still there.

Here’s the thing. Most of those folks were working on the train… and hopping back online after feeding the kids, etc.

These folks have no clue how the modern workforce operates. They see lazy because they only see what’s before them. They have no clue how people are never really signing off.

I'm not overthinking, and tend to agree as a matter of fact. I'm just saying if they pay no mind to internal feedback, posting concerns on a 3rd party blog about RTO likely won't be on management's radar.

100% accurate. Even had one of those old guys say the exact same thing in a call, that "my style of management is to walk around" and admitted to WFH driving him batty. Funny how they can't adapt.

You’re overthinking this.

The company is run by old guys steeped in the old ways of doing business. They perform “management by walking around.” They don’t understand virtual and it scares them because they feel less control.

@dnb no, I don't see the irony. It would be ironic if the blog was called "BNYM RTO" and not "BNY Mellon Layoffs." As far as hypocritical, no clue how that applies either.
Maybe invest in a dictionary to learn what those words mean.

@jcn, and your post isn't going to stop people from voicing their concerns on here. Do you see the irony? Or, I guess it's closer to hypocrisy...

I don't think too many people are keen about RTO. Complaining and whining about it on a blog that's supposed to be about layoffs really isn't going to change what is going on with RTO.

Don't forget the political pressure that is being applied to get people back into the cities.

@jlh+1fDeCzqt I have come to the conclusion that it is entirely manager based. Who else would be keeping track? Working in an office is absolute he-l and I will try my best to avoid it at all costs.

Agree 100 percent. We are lucky-only have to come in twice a week and it doesn’t even sound like we are being strictly policed on the matter.
