Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Advice for newbies?

I was surprised that a young and capable person took the place of a colleague who left a while ago. He is a talented young man, full of enthusiasm and will to work which is rare among the new hires nowadays. To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what advice to give him.

Learn as much as you can, about the business about people about what you don't want to be... even the bad stuff is a life lesson at that stage.
You can tell him he will likely move on soon and to take all these lessons with him.

I think you should try learning something from him when you see him move on in a year. lol

Get some experience then move on. Maybe like 3 years just because the whole first year can be a learning curve depending on who is training you.

Advice: stay for a year, no more than two years, and get some transferrable skills. Don't get sucked into office politics and nonsense. Leave for a company with a better culture that pays more.
