Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Sad work culture!

The sad culture here in my 11 year work experience with this Bank is they want people to sit quietly at the desk and do their work, don't want people to ask enough questions , do what is told and we shouldn't be creative enough.

Most managers don't have the requisite skill set to effectively manage. They're most likely promoted into a manager role because they are good (sometimes decent but liked) at a job which is totally different than being a manager. They don't evolve or adapt.

It's the Peter Principle where in a hierarchy people "tend" rise to their relative level of incompetence. And at BNYM there's a "tendency" multiplier....

@1ypm, plenty of us have job offers, sometimes multiple and have moved on to an actual career instead of sitting at a desk being treated like a high school student. Management does not listen and does not know what's going on. Their answer to everything is just work harder, not smarter.

This is exactly why our people cannot get job offers or even careers. The very mentality of a person who will quietly sit at their desk performing repetitive clerical tasks without asking questions, let alone offering ideas on how to do things better, precludes any career advancement.

Also long gone are the days of your manager being capable of managing.

The days of your manager being able to do your job are long gone and the days of your manager even basically understanding what you do aren’t far behind.

"well, that's how the job is now."
Yeah, don't take that as a serious answer. That has to be met with a "No. It's how you want it to be, but the fact is that it isn't working that way." Period. It's either that, or yeah, you accept the backlog, and adjust the SLA's to match reality. What you can't do is allow them to bully you into working at any unrealistic pace or excessive hours to solve their problem. They've created the problem, and they need to accept the new reality or come up with another solution for it.

What's the point of asking questions when all you're going to get is a S.O.B. reply? I requested a meeting with my supervisor's super and brought up how our team's duties had been increased over the previous couple of years and we were getting logjammed and backlogged because we couldn't complete tasks in the usual expected timeframe. The response I basically got was "well, that's how the job is now."

Gee, thanks for dealing with THAT problem.

(S.O.B. = Standard Operational Bullsh*t)

It is better to sit idle at your desk than to do these menial jobs which is no value add to your CV or work experience. Company plays with your career you must learn to outplay them.

I don’t think they want you to work. I think they just want you to sit at your desk.
