Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Is anyone making 100k?

Just curious. I’ve been working for 8 years…recently hit the threshold for 100k here (i started out of college at a different company making 40). It’s been quite the ride over the past few years and thought 100k was a lot but with inflation and what not, I’m curious if this isn’t as much as i think. I am not a manager.

I was making $180k and left for a job paying $405k in 2019. So glad I did.

@4nuc

Lies. Only the very top range of grade K/L+ makes over 200k. The bank is too cheap to give 200k to "everyone you work with"
Tell us which area we will all move over

@2uzs, you must be in operations in Oriskany. Everyone I work with, even in low cost areas are making double that.

@2oby+, not 10%, closer to 50%. Especially when you factor in the cost of onshore supervisors. And that's PER PERSON. So they're really spending twice as much as they were for people with little education and experience who will turn over every 8 months.

@2oby+1fkhNFZw You shouldn't have been making that much money anyway. That is an obscene amount for someone to probably just be checking out their IG, Netflix and lord knows what else-P&rnhub, perhaps?

I made $140k working in software development. I was laid off, replaced by 4 offshore developers who were willing to do the needful for 10% of the cost.

dude - no offense but if you and your wife each make 103k, I'm sure you are comfortable and saving.....

That is quite a bit different than what the op is taking about......

@1ccw

This is exactly what's wrong with the system.

This guy below, grinding for years, knows his(her) sh1t around the firm, works (kiss) the bu-t off, made it to an L, only makes 100k.
You are probably fairly new, level i, makes 101k right off the bat. (You are probably smart and bright, nothing against you)

And management keep asking why good old employees wouldn't stay

I'm a level I in IT. I make $103k + bonus, which is usually another 2.5 - 3%.

I could probably leave and make more elsewhere, but I actually like what I do. Also, it's not how much you make, it's how much you save that really matters. We keep up at least a 30% (of gross income) savings rate (my wife makes almost as much as I do), and once we're done paying for kid's college we'll be pretty much set.

Retirement can be a lot cheaper elsewhere. You can live a nice life in places like Portugal for a few thousand a month, or around what we pay for a mortgage and property taxes right now.

Wow... "I'm a J in Pgh. Make 99k plus a bonus. When recruited I was told I would get a bonus between 7-9% each year - they lied. It's never been above 5k."

Being a J and barely making 60k with a bonus that isn't even close to half of your max... I'll never see 100k. The salary/bonus structure at BNY is horrible. You have to leave and come back to get a decent raise.

Seriously now, public employee's pension in NY and in any and all governments is a Cadillac retirement. Why do you think that local governments have been going bankrupt around the country for decades…. too many government pigs swilling at the trough.

And you KNOW they don’t work even 40 hours a week let alone weekends.

And no.... I am not rich. I drive old cars live in a modest house..... I have no debt, but it has nothing to do with BNYM generosity..... it's all because I am cheap - I have to be considering every year I make less due to inflation versus raise.

I topped out a little above 100k when I was canned last year. Errr, I mean my position was eliminated and is now done by Atulijajibab.
My net worth is around 2 million but that's barely more than what a public employee's pension is worth in NY.

Yes. Most level "I"s and above. And, no it is not a lot of money these days, especially in the very high cost NYC and Boston areas. Barely enough to get by on if you want a decent standard of living.

I’ve worked here four years since graduating and I make $130k after bonus. The analyst on my team who just graduated last year makes $90k after bonus. It’s all about what function you have at the bank, the businesses and client facing stuff pays reasonably well, the support functions don’t pay so well.

Agree with others that the six figure mark isn’t what it used to be. That was always some benchmark people in the 1960s would have as a mark of career success. $100k back then is like $800k now, 100k in 2022 doesn’t make you rich but it’s also certainly a lot more than many people make and so one should always be careful not to take their success for granted.

When I was younger I thought making 100k would mean I’d made it. I've made above 100 for several years now and in spite of nominal raises, with inflation my buying power has only deteriorated in that time. The American dream doesn't exist anymore. All we have left is scrambling for table scraps and supporting our families on credit.
