Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

Job bands are going away

They will move from 10 bands to 5 groups. This will happen Q1 2023. No further clarification was given. On an HR call now where it was mentioned.

When I was at the bank (I recently left), I think there were 10 bands and while I’m sure this may have varied across Divisions or Departments, I think the general structure went something like this (at least, in my group). I always looked at bands being in 3 categories: Executives (B0-3), Managers (B4-6), and Support Staff (B7-9).

  1. Band 0 - CEO
  2. Band 1 - CEO Directs
  3. Band 2 - SVP, Executive II
  4. Band 3 - SVP, Executive I
  1. Band 4 - SVP, Manager II or VP, Manager II
  2. Band 5 - VP, Manager I or AVP, Manager I
  3. Band 6 - AVP, Specialist
  1. Band 7 - Exec Assistants (maybe some Admins)
  2. Band 8 - Admins
  3. Band 9 - Minimum Wage

This is just a general rule of thumb. I know there are Managing Directors and Investment Bankers in the company and I have no idea what bands they fall into.

Also, I thought that waaaayy back in the day (when they were advocates of the MyWork program) that only Bands 4-6 were eligible. I could be wrong, but someone once told me that the execs needed to be in the office + the admins who supported them also needed to be on site. But middle management (mostly B4-6) could work remotely with the understanding that:

  • We had been employed and on site for at least a year before we were eligible to go on the program
  • We had to sign something saying we understood that remote work was just a desk in an area outside the office (such as home), but was not meant to replace child care, etc. and that noises from TVs, barking dogs, kids, etc. would not be tolerated
  • We still had to come into the office as needed for Telepresence meetings (for me, this was maybe twice per quarter)
  • Our manager had to approve it, so even if an employee was eligible it was still at the manager’s discretion to say yes or no
  • We got up to $1,000 in equipment (one-time only) to buy approved items like a chair, a monitor, a printer, a shredder, etc.
  • We got to expense our phone & internet bill
  • The company saved real estate space and we saved on the commute. Win/win.

Disclaimer: I was on the MyWork program over 10 years ago so it’s a little hazy and some of this may not be 100% accurate. It’s just my very fuzzy recollection.

Wonder how this will affect things like vacation and paid weeks for severance packages. Currently, there is a difference in number of weeks for Band 4 vs. Band 5.

Job band changes typically surround a reorganization at BOA. Wonder how many will be axed and who will get dumped on for the same crummy pay.

If they're going to start B8 & B9 at $25/hr soon and not increase any of the existing B7-B5 to compensate, it makes sense to just lump them all together.
Sarcasm. Maybe.

I thought we only had bands 0-7 today. What are bands 8-10?

Truthfully, I fail to see why anyone should particularly care.
