If your office closes, can they force you to sit in another office that is more than 30 miles way?

Legally, the Bank is only required to inform you that your job location has changed. Doesn't matter if it's 30 miles or 3,000 miles. You have two options : a) Report to the new location under the terms of the job (i.e; report date, no WFH) , or b) agree to separation from the Bank. It's that simple folks.
If THEY move the office, perhaps. Otherwise, if you already live too far (or god forbid, move without their permission), they'll just make you miserable until you leave or find some other viable reason to fire you.
I was told they can offer severance if it’s over 50 miles. I’ve seen exceptions made for less than that so it doesn’t hurt to ask.
Typically no, but there are exceptions (such as an employee moving out of market without prior approval).
Did they at least get severance?
When my friends position was eliminated, HR told her they couldn’t force her to take another role since other offices were >30 miles so she got severance.
Yes. This happened in one office in California during the past year. They moved the office and if you refused to return to that office you were basically fired or had to quit. It was farther away for many people so they had to leave. No excuses or allowances to WFH or anything
